OOMT: Tottenham Hotspur vs Some team from somewhere in Europe

That you can qualify for a tournament by being one of the better teams in Europe and then be able to go and put out a weakened first team in that tournament which is designed to show off the best teams around is utterly ridiculous!!!
You get into Europe to see the best of the best, not see group games full of players making there debuts etc.

Hope we put out a decent side 2mor and destroy 'em!

I think the parachute of CL clubs is what makes the competition a mockery. You can have clubs that have lost their previous ties winning a cup competition.

The large number of games in the CL is to gain the clubs and UEFA money. Its mutually beneficial, even if it makes some games uninteresting. But with the CL you do get some good games early on and the format results in the best teams in the knockout phases. Whatever its evils, the latter stages are compelling and bring in the big money.

Repeating the same format in the EL doesn't serve the clubs at all. 17-19 games to win a competition with little prize or TV money is of little benefit to the clubs. The extra gates are negated by need for a larger squad and lack of interest from the fans. Its porbably more expensive to compete in the EL than to skip it and trim the squad. A return to a knock-out tournament would be much more exciting and would make clubs take it more seriously.

UEFA won't want this for two reasons. One, they don't want competition for their premium money-spinner. Two, they need somewhere to put national champions who would clutter their main event and keep out 3rd and 4th placed teams from the big leagues. A bloated EL is needed to allow a bloated CL to bring in the money.

There's a game on ? When ? If our second string can't cope, do we go for it with the 1st team ? I'm seriously torn... Winning's a good habit to develop

Agree with that, and no CL parachutes either.

UEFA probably thinks it improves the competition. They also need it as a fallback for those that screw up their participation in the greatest football competition on earth by fielding WEAKENED sides.

on the plane.

Squad flying -

Vertonghen
Walker
Dempsey
Dawson
Sigurdsson
Cudicini
Townsend
Falque
Lennon
Hudd
Gallas
Sandro
Caulker
Naughton
Lloris
Livermore
Defoe
Mason

No Bale, Dembele or Ade. (Didn't see them)

I'm at the back of the plane so may not have seen everyone. But I saw 18 players. The ones I named above.

From someone on COYS.

Wasnt there a rumour going that Ade had refused to play one of the earlier games in the Europa League? I think it was the game against Panathinaikos

It certainly seems a bit odd; Ade got the last 15 minutes on saturday and this would be the perfect opportunity to build up his fitness and give Defoe a rest

Hopefully he is not causing a fuss because of the lack of playing time. The rags will certainly pick up on this.

When: Thursday at some ridiculous time when most of us are still working
Where: Arse end of nowhere

Teams: Meh

Prediction: I will tinkle off everyone at work, speed home and forgo my dinner in order to watch a match where the players clearly don't care.

Stick your two-bob cup

From someone who presumably remembers the old UEFA CUP it's disappointing if you really believe its a two bob cup. So what if it's been undermined by the money bags running the game it's a major trophy. I wanna win it.

Remembering the old UEFA is precisely why I don't rate this incarnation.

When I were a lad you used to play Europe's biggest teams and you only had to play 6 teams to win the thing. Last time we won it we played the first round against minnows (due to our high seeding IIRC) and then every other match was against a recognised European name.

Everything UEFA has done to the once great contest (even down to renaming it) has completely devalued anything that it once was. Like I said a page or two back, now we're in it we should try to win every match - winning's a habit and it's one I want our team to get into. Ideally though we'd have sent UEFA a nice little letter of "Thanks but no thanks" during preseason so they could have entered another team in our stead.

AVB:

"They have done very well in the past 10 years and have won many titles. They play aggressive 4-4-2, Maribor is a decisive point in the group phase for us. We don't expect an easy game, Gareth hasn't travelled for family reasons. He'll train at home to get ready for Southampton, Ade has a pain in his back so he's recovering. Not a lot of time to rest in coming months, we need to be careful. Dembele is slowly returning - big possibility for Southampton. Scott & Kaboul still recovering. Benoit 2 weeks"

Re: OOMT: Tottenham Hotspur vs Some team from somewhere in Europe

How arrogant is this thread title, we are so used to playing in Europe its getting boring now is it? every " tin pot " team in England cant wait to play in the F.A. cup, its what dreams are made of, are we too important to play weaker teams in this as well, when I played the Cup rounds were special and fun. this competetion gives fringe players a chance to show what they can do and the lesser teams get a chance to play against supposedly class opposition like Tottenham Hotspur, it makes me want to weep, ask any player, they would rather play two games a week and train less anyday.

Rant over.

Don't waste your breath Jimmy, most of the people on here think for some divine right we deserve Champions League football every year and that being in the Europa League is nothing because we don't take it seriously anyway.

They obviously dont remember when we would have been happy to win the girl guides trophy, it makes me dispair, these are good times for us.

I don't think we deserve CL every season, but i do believed the Europa league is nothing, because Uefa don't even take it seriously.
