My memory might be faulty, but wasn't Gilzean the more mobile of the two. That makes him a better choice here. Chivers was more the classic centre forward whereas you need a more dynamic player for the lone forward. Otherwise Bobby Smith would probably be the man.

Yes, but Chiv was an all out CF, and probably could have fit into todays line-up. Gilly was a classic number 10, laying on more than scoring, although he definitely chipped in with a fair few.
Possibly better option than Dempsey or Sig right now.

That Gilly-Chiv partnership really was a thing of beauty at times.

he would do fine. His extraordinary ability to find space in the box and get on the end of crosses would still be devastatingly effective in todays game

plus his sheer electric pace, underestimated ability in the air, intelligent running of the channels. Top top class

Plus he was brave, all great goal scorers have to be.

When Gilzean first came to Spurs he used to pick the ball up and run at players he was excellent with the ball at his feet, after numerous kickings he stopped doing that and tended to lay the ball off early, Chivers was very mobile and very quick for a big man, he was a 11 sec over 100 yards man, Smith was not quick at all but had a good touch and was as hard as nails.

Greaves. Several worthy candidates, Hoddle, Gilzean and Lineker among them, but a deadly deadly finisher makes so much difference.

I was daydreaming the other day about Berb's performance at home to Bolton in 2007. Wow. One of the best individual performances I've ever seen from a Spurs player.

A cvnt he may be, but in this team at his prime... it'd be a joy to watch.

I'd set the Delorean for 14th April 1991 at about 3pm around about the time he was being interviewed and said "I'm off to get me suit measured!!" and pick up Gazza.

Would love to make a stop off in 1995 to pick up Klinsmann as well, but that would be greedy.

Lineker's strength was his pace (under rated) and movement. As a lone front man, those skills are just as, if not more, important than strength.

I cant believe anyone that's mentioned a goal scorer so far is looking at anyone else apart from Greaves. It baffles the mind.

If I'd have been born early enough to see him play I would have probably picked him, but I'm nowhere near old enough, so couldn't pick him. Personally I never tend to choose players I've not seen live in these sort of games.

could it simply be that many posters are too young to have seen him play

But the question has to be in which position. His natural position in today's formation puts him in contention with Hoddle, who was also not a bad goal scorer and would score more in a more advanced position.

I don't think Lineker or Greaves would be particularly suited to playing lone forward in a modern 4-5-1 system.

For that reason I think Berbs/Chiv/Smith are more the forwards that would suit us now, albeit they were arguably not as good players.

Hoddle to complete our CM trio is an interesting one - I just wondered if he might be a bit too casual for a high-tempo pressing AVB team, which I why I went for Gazza over him.

I agree with 90% of this, Hoddle is quite simply the best player I have ever seen in a Spurs shirt so I would get him in somewhere.

I vaguely recall Lineker playing as a lone forward actually, and it wasn't great.

I think it was early in the 91/92 season (maybe some Cup Winners Cup games), when Durie and Walsh were both out injured/suspended, and we went with that instead of using Paul Moran (the Harry Kane of his day).

i think great, proven over time, players can play in any system/formation, in any era

For me Lineker was the arch-predator, never seen anyone else snap up half-chances like he could. And you could pretty much put put your house on him in a one-on-one with the goalie, he was that clinical.

I'd still have Greaves ahead of him though. Greavesie would create chances out of nothing, dancing and slithering through a ruck of players like the ball was attached to his boots, he might even lose it momentarily but somehow still emerge with it at his feet, several defenders in his wake, and his finishing was probably even more deadly. Lineker didn't really do that kind of stuff.

Less sure about Greaves but I agree on Linekar. Linekar was never required to hold the ball up because every team he played in was set up to get balls into the six yard box for him to convert, our current team could not provide that.

Hoddle in the hole behind the front man. More than capable of getting 20+ goals per season and would be a better player in the modern game than he was in the eighties when water carriers like Bryan Robson were trying to kick seven lumps of brick out of him every week. The man was born 30 years too soon.

Lineker is a good call but I think he would struggle up front on his own. Klinsmann however would absolutely thrive in this team.

There, you asked for one, I gave you two but Hoddle, Hoddle, Hoddle is the man. If you didn't see him, he was better than you have been told.

Hoddle would be nowhere near the England team nowadays as boremongers like Hodgson would rather a bunch of hardworkers than arguably the greatest technical player from our nation, given that Milner and Parker are two of our mainstays in midfield you can see how badly the skill level has declined since 1998.

The number of times Lennon and especially Bale cross the ball into the six yard box and Defoe is nowhere near is laughable, Lineker would have thrived on that, also Lineker could and did receive the ball in space and hold it up, Greaves I agree with you on in todays game he would be a number 10.
