More generally, I haven’t watched much of Brighton, but when I watched a load of Bissouma videos on YouTube - the ones which claim to show all of a player’s involvements from a single match - I noticed he was doing those unnecessary backward passes a lot. And his passing stats suggest the same (fbref stats go into a fair bit of detail). So I fear last night’s limited passing might not be a blip, and that his strengths are more limited to press resistance and ball-winning.

But I would have course love to be proven wrong!

Brighton play a very very different game to us
And he was settled there
Thsi was his first start

I agree. Only slight worry I have is that Brighton’s is a system that makes players look better than they are.

The main issue was Hojbjerg standing watching as Soucek ran onto the assist. Bissouma was jogging towards Antonio. Nobody anticipated the cute flick and the run from Soucek at all.

I think Perisic was moaning that Lloris is absolutely crap at distributing and should have yeeted it upfield.

I saved the substitution bit for the end... it was baffling and I could only postulate that it was Conte sending some kind of message to Levy/the board to SPEND MORE MONEY! I forgot to mention that maybe he didn't sub Bissouma off so as to not harm his confidence, and same thing with Sonny maybe? After Son was disappointed from his last hauling off, maybe Conte decided he didn't want to tinkle him off further. I haven't read any convincing theories here about the subs unless I missed something, but yeah I'm a bit clueless.
Finally, I'm also not sure why Son was on corner duty with Perisic on the field. Not that Son can't take decent corners but failing to beat the first man is extremely poor.

1/ conte hasn't used our new signings that much saying he trusts the old players and wants them to learn the system. Not sure how him not using subs says spend more money.
2/ as for corners. The last we scored from was a son then perisic assist. We have a set piece specialist to decide them. 2 goals from 5 games is good. Is there a team that has scored more from corners so far this season?

1. It's not about using the signings we just made this summer, I would've thought Conte would replace Perisic (who played two games in a row in relatively short time) with Sessegnon (not a new signing), Spence/Doherty for Royal, maybe replace a midfielder with Sarr (assuming Skipp isn't really ready to feature). Otherwise, what's your theory for Conte only using one sub? Again, none of the players I mentioned count as new signings, can maybe only make that argument for Sarr about not knowing the system. He's used at least a few subs in every other game when we were arguably performing better.

I was asking you how you came to the conclusion that conte not using subs, was a message to levy to spend more money? I can't see any logic in that thinking.
As for son hitting the first man, i'm guessing thats down to the new set pieces coach telling him to try and get it in low and fast to the near post. As he did with the one we scored from. If that needs to change and son not take them fine.

You should read my original post, the longer one. I think I make it pretty clear it's just my opinion and the logic I is used is simple. Not sure why my "guess" needs such scrutiny because like I said, it's pretty simple (maybe too simple, I get things wrong all the time).
Even though Conte makes strange decisions at times, he gets results and this is nowhere near as bad as watching us under Mourinho. The job Conte has done is incredible, getting us top-4 last season and I can't wait to see what he does in the CL. The club definitely need to back this guy because I trust whatever he's doing on the pitch even if it baffles me those odd times he does something (or doesn't do something) I think is weird.

As an aside, I also forgot to mention the ref's performance in yesterday's game. The guy didn't have the authority to officiate a PL match of this stature. I don't think it was a penalty but he blew too early... ok, mistakes happen, we'll never know what would've happened but overall, thought he was a bit weak with his decisions.

Hojbjerg is terrible for this, the amount of goals we lose by midfielders running past him is amazing.

Son has been hitting the first man at corners for longer than conte has been here nevermind the new set piece guy.
Eriksen also became guilty of it.
And yes guilty is a deliberately chosen word.

we remain unable to coach that kind of mistake out of players

Hugo is another example, he's been doing that stupid slow flighted fudging dink for a decade, when it doesn't go out of play it just puts the recipient in trouble as its been in the air so long all eleven opposition players have had time to form a ring around them

it's infuriating

Opposition coaches planning for playing against us, press the keeper and rb, mark front post at corners and don't worry about giving away free kicks around the box.

I felt so sorry for him when that bloke scored the own goal; leave the fecker and Sonny has timed his run into the space perfectly and taps in, gets his first goal of the season and from there, who knows? I would be worried if he wasn't getting into positions. Watch him smash a hat-trick sooner than later!!!
