With all due respect to your daughter, there is no way Ade could even reach the goal with a shot from outside the area.
This. Although he always seemed to manage it for le scum against us...
Anyway.....
---------------Lloris(fit?)-----------------
Walker---Dawson-----Caulker--Vertonghen
---------Parker------Dembele-------------
Sig-----------Dempsey-------------Holtby
-------------Adebayor-------------------
I believe this season Lloris has emphatically demonstrated why he is a far more suitable candidate in goal than Friedel, and if he's fit he has to start. Although they're missing Fellaini, the thought of Friedel in goal as Baines whips in corners and freekicks is frightening.
I am very worried about this game, chiefly because we will lack any width whatsoever. To combat this I would like to see Walker at RB and Vertonghen at LB. We all know Walker's strengths in this regard (extreme pace, willingness to hit the byline, decent at cutting the ball back), but I feel Vertonghen would actually provide more of a wide threat in advanced areas than Benny. Against Fulham at home Benny was totally lost at LM and often simply ended up swapping with Vertonghen (more out of timidity than clever movement), who likes to get forward anyway. Caulker is also capable of driving out of defense if we need that surprise factor. Finally, having an extra tall bloke might help with defending set-pieces.
Hopefully those two would provide enough of an overlapping threat to compensate with the weakness of our midfield in wide areas. It would be nice to see Holtby on the left and Sigurdsson on the right to begin with, with one of them within 5 yards of the touchline at all times, and to see them try to beat their man and get the cross/pull-back in at least on occasion. This might be a tad idealistic, but we lack structure without a proper winger, stricter instructions would open up a bit of space in the middle. If we are struggling after 20-30 mins I would let them off the leash a bit more. If Parker continues to churn out the dross that he demonstrated against Basel midweek then he has to come off for Tom Carroll, it is imperative that we circulate the ball quickly from side to side and Parker of late has been a pit of quicksand, slowly killing the impetus of our attacks with his indecision.
I think in attack it is a toss up between Dempsey and Defoe as to who partners Adebayor. It would be a tragic mistake to start Defoe as the lone striker and as such Ade has to lead the line. With our enforced changes in midfield, Defoe might benefit from playing ahead of 2 AMs who are more likely to play him in behind than cross it to him. Then again, we are playing Everton at home, which means the space in behind will likely be precious little, and neither Defoe's movement nor our midfield's passing range are good enough to catch Everton out with a long pass on the break. So I would pick Dempsey. He is a goalscorer and in absence of Bale along with the form of Ade and Defoe, he could be the man to step up - he can finish tap-ins, long-shots, volleys, headers and is our biggest remaining goal threat. Plus I think he would benefit from playing with Adebayor, who often vacates the space that Dempsey loves to attack.
A massive game, we need to control the midfield, otherwise Baines will *struggle cuddle* us down the left without Azza there to help Walker. Parker has looked slow as treacle recently as well and based on the Basel game will provide scant cover. Stretching Everton by taking up wide positions and quickly circulating the ball from flank to flank will be key.
COYS!
