It's not the lack of transfers, it's the bad luck we've had with injuries! You don't sign players in case you have 3 centre midfielders out with lengthy injuries at the same time. If only one of them had been fit, we'd have pretty much no issues, and could have rotated sensibly.
We've been incredibly unlucky. Take winjaldum, keita and Fabinho out of Liverpool for pretty much the entire season so far, and they would not be in the position they're currently in.

Of course its partly the lack of transfers. Liverpool have finished below us, what, 9 out of the past 10 seasons? Klopp is an exceptional manager but he's also been backed and they've spent big on the positions that they need. Now a team with a crap defence and crap keeper are on course to break the leagues defensive record, having signed in those two positions.

Perhaps more importantly though, it is hardly surprising that dembele, wanyama and lamela make up three of our injured players, seeing as they have questionable injury records.

They've done well considering the circumstances and we've been unlucky that dier had to have an appendicectomy but it is pretty poor we've ended up with winks and sissoko playing the majority of our games in cm and lucky that sissoko has had this renaissance in form. It is not bad luck that lamela or the two cms are injured. Pretty much my default is that they're injured and I see it as a positive when they're not.

Unfortunately i cant see this changing much when we go to NWHL. Yes the atmosphere should be better but youre still going to have those people you mention going. Its a new breed of fans that dont sing or cheer. Too busy snapchatting them or tagging their mates in a post. Youve also got the middle age posh fcuks who think its cool to watch football, but wont cheer.

Least they stay til the final whistle..

Not sure why you think that, unless you are focusing on the Christmas fixtures in isolation. To my knowledge other teams did not have a tough Champions league qualification and an extra derby against fierce rivals leading into Christmas.
And Liverpool, for example, don't play until Thursday (I think) while we play again on Tuesday. Fixtures are spread out so different clubs get different rest periods.

After getting over my initial disappointment at the final result with Wolves, I've found myself thinking this actually might not be a bad outcome.

First off, it removes all the artificially imposed media hype that Spurs somehow were actual contenders for the title. I never bought into that misconception for a second. We have a really fine group of players, but still far from the sort of finished article that Liverpool or City have become.

Secondly, it now puts everything back on a more 'keep it real' footing. We have a great chance for a top-four finish, which should now be the priority. It will absolutely sicken two of Arsenal, Chelsea and ManU not to be playing CL football while we continue to roll on. But getting league wins becomes a priority and beating sides like Cardiff next game is essential.

Thirdly, we should also be thinking realistically about cup competitions. We have a very decent shot at the league cup, so why not run out our best sides and give it a go? Beat Chelsea and we're likely playing City for the cup, something which surely can't remotely serve as their priority. But if City lose in the league to Liverpool, well, maybe the league cup begins to look like the start of their compensation process. We need to monitor our league situation carefully before shooting our bolt in league cup play, but I'd still make this a priority over the FA Cup.

The CL tie against Dortmund is a no brainer. We have to give it a go and we will. The players will simply want it too much to allow for any other decision to be made. One round at a time in this event. Can't even begin to think too far ahead.

The FA Cup is a lovely event, but it's not like Wembley has some special allure for us anymore. I'd make this cup comp expendable - run out the reserves early on and see where it takes us. But if we are being run close for a top four spot, I'd chuck this trophy aside gladly.

Wanyama and Dembele being injured isn’t bad luck!

It’s what a few of us had said in the summer - relying on injury prone players is not a good idea

Can’t help but agree. In the pre season transfer thread I said that CM is the one area where I wanted us to splash the cash on one quality player.

Liverpool added Keita and Fabinho so even with injuries to Milner and Ox they can field Fabinho and Wijnaldum yesterday and still have Keita and Henderson on the bench.

Winks and Sissoko have done brilliantly but the injuries and sheer volume of games is catching up.

Ps. Worth noting that their 6 CMs aren’t generally injury prone.

Of our 5, 2 seem to struggle for fitness quite a bit.

That might have been just outside the box. The second one was even clearer to me. Their guy making sure our guy doesn't get his head on the cross. Ref was having a stinker though. Seemed like he let most things pass as a shoulder barge, but occasionally he'd blow for something really soft.

Started outside, continued into the box, it should have been a pen.

Both were available for sale. The club were happy to move both on and make room in the squad. Dembele priced himself out of a move and Wanyama was hurt. Absolutely NO-ONE “relied on injury prone players”!!! This is (by now) fairly common knowledge. I posted back in the spring they were happy to move them on.

Valid points on injury prone players. Dembele and Lamela seem to miss games most seasons. In dembele’s case it has felt like it is degenerative and would be an argument against giving him a new contract with the wages he may be able to earn elsewhere, unless it was on a pay as you play basis which I think only a fan of the club would accept. If we can get him back before the end of the season his unique skill set could be used sparingly but I’m not optimistic we will see a run of starts from him. Lamela’s new contract was a surprise to me, every time it seems he has turned a corner injury wise there seems to be a different set back. Fortunately he’s not first choice in his position but he does offer something different and he would have been an asset yesterday.
Wanyama even when he did make it back looked a shadow of his former self. I don't think he was injury prone like the other two but the combination of the injury itself and the lay off make it seem very unlikely we will see the old Wanyama again. Even Winks looks a different player after his injury, oddly quicker running with the ball but lacking the quick progressive passing ability that was his strength when he broke through.
Dier will be an interesting one as saying fit has been one of his strengths - as his game isn’t based on speed or turning I’m optimistic he’ll be ok but it’s difficult to predict when he will be ready as it’s a non football injury. We need to bite the bullet and get a cm in as sad as it is for them personally everything is pointing to Dembele and Wanyama have a very small chance of contributing for us on a regular basis again.

We've certainly had a very tough December. On reflection, I think that it is impossible for us to know whether the second half performance was down to fatigue or trying to avoid fatigue. I guess that we will find out on New Years Day.

Truth be told, we could do with a Dier, Verts, Aurier, Lamela or even Dembele return or two. Dier, Verts and Lamela are vital squad players. I think a Dier or Verts yesterday and we see that game out.

I don’t entirely disagree mate, but Dembele and Wanyama have both had poor injury records. It was foreseeable that we would have had problems this year relying on one or both. The issue was not that we didn’t need to bring in cover more that we couldn’t without shifting one or both.
Who buys players with poor injury records off us though

We didnt have to name either in the squad.

It was a mistake to not bring someone in, thankfully we have a month to try and fix this.

If Wanyama is unlikely to make an impact we need someone in, even if it means leaving Wanyama out the squad.
