Defoe isn't the problem. The problem is we are reliant on a certain way of playing still from under Redknapp, which is wing-play. But our players aren't really that suited to it. We really need a central creative player who can feed through-balls through. We have controlled this entire game and West Ham look very ordinary, but we haven't carved them open time and again because we get to the area and we either run out of ideas and have to go back or we put in a cross that without anyone really good in the air in there, is often cleared. With Dembele in the team we look more dangerous as he runs centrally through midfield. If we did that more we'd be much more dangerous. As it is we are a good possession team that struggles to create clear-cut chances.
Our best performances have been with either Dembele or Carroll in midfield. Otherwise we are relying on one of our star players to come up with a bit of magic, like when Bale hit the bar and when luckily Defoe decides to beat 3 players and hammer it in the bottom corner.
