I'm ridiculously anti Liverpool because I hate them with a passion so I'm only buying into the conspiracy theories because it's them.

But I don't think they were off their game last night particularly. The way we set up made it difficult for them and they've no plan B. It was the same at our place. Every system has a weak point and there's is the amount of space in behind because they push up so high which they need to do to keep pressure on the opposition. Conte's tactics were spot on. They played as well last night as they usually do. We just defended well and in numbers and had the players up top to cause them problems.

Stop the crosses
Deal with every high ball on the box
Force them to play centrally and compact that space
It stops them playing

I don't like Liverpool either and we played well yesterday and were well organized. But we lost playing the same way to Brighton a few weeks ago which is partly the reason we are trailing Woolwich. Royal, Davies Romero and Dier did a great job defending yesterday but we were awful playing out from the back.

I get we are a work in progress and no where near the level of Liverpool but let's be honest they weren't on their A game yesterday, they didn't look sharp, their crossing still happened but they were poor crosses, VDV had two free headers from set pieces but luckily both were poor and, while they got lucky with their goal, ours started by a hopeful punt up field by Emerson that Kane dealt with brilliantly.

Overall I actually thought we played better against them at the Lane. I was happy though that we managed a point away at Liverpool so the team and manager deserve credit.

Idk if it’s true, but apparently 63% of pools squad is asthmatic. 12% of the UK population are.

We’ve seen it in cycling, anyone with any tenuous breathing condition gets a doc to declare them asthmatic and hey presto you can take performance enhancers. Maybe the air is bad up there…

How many times did we literally kick it back to them in the middle of the pitch, usually from our wide centre backs? It was almost like it was deliberate...give it back to them to draw them forward and then hit them on the counter. Risky, but it was effective because of how solid we were centrally.

Don't think we were awful playing out from the back.

We did give the ball away too often, but we were able to beat their press on occasion, played with real bravery and at times at least quality.

We're not top level at this, Liverpool are one of the best high pressing teams around. This is what happens when we (rightly) try to play it out. We were able to stay fairly balanced when doing so, even when we did lose the ball we had enough players in the right positions to make sure we weren't immediately in a really dangerous situation.

If it was deliberate, and it worked, then that's a combination of absolute genius and cojones the size of Ndombele's lunch!

I find it unlikely though, thinking that it's more due to (1) many of our players falling a little shy of world class when it comes to short passing, and (2) the ferocity of Liverpool's press.

What I found particularly encouraging though was how we kept our defensive shape when losing the ball to interceptions in the middle of the pitch, or even our defensive third. Often, these interceptions happen as a team is in transition from defence to attack -- players are looking forward, running forward, and have broken out of their defensive formation. Against Liverpool, that just didn't happen. As though it had been drummed into the team to wait one more pass than usual before breaking forwards. I think there's been some excellent defensive coaching this past week.

That’s a fair point and applies to most coaches but particularly philosophy coaches like Pep and Klopp. They never mix it up. It helps that their plan A is exceptional and they have great players. But Jose at his peak had a plan B, Conte doesn’t always set his team up like he set us up both times against Liverpool and I even recall Fergie mixing it up several times in Europe. I guess those three are more practical than wedded to a philosophy though.

Conte will be more set in his tactics when he has the players to play those tactics (ie the players he wants) .

The proof is in the pudding, City and Liverpool easily look the most dominant sides and capable of winning anything. If you refine and perfect everything down to small details and have all the players you want, you're probably going to stick with that as it works. Ironically it's when Pep overthinks it (especially in finals) is when it falls down for him.

It's great though (for football) that the two of them can be equally brilliant by playing a completely different way to each other.

The one downside to the relentless and almost robotic nature of playing one way is it needs refreshing from the players pov. And timing that is important. (Some) Players can get jaded hearing the same message and running themselves into the ground. Although I must say, Klopp is doing a good job of keeping the band together.

Rent Boys song was fair enough, I didn't think it was homophobic, but it wasn't witty and it was outdated. But joblessness now? Will we get to the stage where chants can not offend or insult at all? I am all for protecting people's genuine rights, but there are laws protecting humor and satire too. If these are eroded, that would be a loss imo.

If the PL did anything to protect ticket prices and made it mandatory that low-income fans got a seat, then maybe you could make some case for it...but they dont.
