***OMT TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR vs KAA Gent - 2nd Leg***

And in fairness he acted quickly when Davies was effectively playing as a forward, by bringing on Son which worked. Poch was probably too slow with the third sub, but any injury and we'd have been down to 9.

But it's a knock out cup game

If he gambled and that happened it could be forgiven

He has to realise these are do or die games and he has to start winning them to get us to the next level

  • Spurs have been eliminated from eight of their past nine European knockout ties in which they have lost the first leg.
  • Since the start of 2013-14, Harry Kane has scored four own goals - twice as many as any other Tottenham player.

He does have an eye for goal.

As he's one of our own it makes sense he scores own goals.

Well how frustrating. An enjoyable game, I really felt we'd win it at 2-1 and it was electric for that period in the match. Well done Gent. Your fans were incredible, should be proud. Good luck in the next round.

Spurs will be kicking themselves at going out to a team that were clearly a few levels below us. They were not a great side, but the pivotal moments in the tie really went against us.
Wanyama, Dembele, Alderweireld and Vertonghen were heroic today. Eriksen was very good and Son was super when he came on.

Love you Kane, but you had a stinker tonight. Never mind, onwards and upwards. 3 points on Sunday please!

Edit* can't believe I forgot to mention Walker. Incredible effort today

Just back at the hotel from Wembley. Had to drown my sorrows at the pub before turning in. I thought we played well, especially the first 25 minutes of the 2nd half. Walker was superb, and Davies is a waste of space in a 343 formation. He's just to cautious going forward, and we didn't create anything down the left side. Looked like the other players were reluctant to play the ball to him as well, because he was to far back and not looking to attack. Things improved massively on that side when Son came on for him.

Dele's tackle was horrendous! It happened right in front of me, and I honestly thought he broke the leg of the Gent player! That said, it was about the only thing the ref got right all game. He was really really poor! Even the easiest of throw in decisions went the wrong way!

We should have won this game by 3 or 4 goals at least, but once again poor finishing let us down. Overall play was good, but I'm bitterly disappointed by the result. The atmosphere was great at times, and full credit to the Gent supporters! The were tremendous throughout the game.

Edit: To add to the referee shambles ; 3 fudging minutes added time? What a fudging joke! 6 subs is 3 minutes alone, and their GK spent about 5 minutes taking goal kicks! Should have been at least 6 minutes added time!

For those 20 mins or so I thought it was on.The entire section i was in rose to sing and in parts the atmosphere was pretty good but its a results business and i am not too down as we just aren't at it enough in the away legs to win this tourney.Part of me would rather we didn't have any europe next year if we don't have CL but that is not the correct way if you want to build a team.I could see the refection of Alli's studs when he lunged in but he is young and sometimes stupid and hopefully he learns from this.Score a couple on Sunday and its all forgotten

Just back home from Wembley, via pub, and still dumbfounded as to how we lost that match o_O

Yes, Dele was daft to get sent off like that and the referee did his best to make life difficult for us but to concede 2 such poor goals plus waste so many good chances

Will have to watch the highlights but certainly felt like a game we could've easily won handsomely had Kane been in as good form as he showed at weekend.

Son was good down the left and then went central and was toss

Son is a good player but he drifts around too much which doesn't help
Couldn't believe it after the havoc he was causing Gent down the left when he'd suddenly switched to the right. Most of his dazzling footwork in the box was right in front of me and I thought, wow, this is exactly what we've been missing, Davies had been a complete waste of space but now we're in business, he's bound to make the difference the way he's giving them the runaround.

Then - nothing. A chasm, a black hole, a vacuum. He'd disappeared over the other side where Walker already had them running around in circles. What in hell's name was that all about?

We need answers from Poch - but of course we're not going to get them.

We must be the only team who can snatch failure from the jaws of success regularly ! Find it hard to believe and accept that we lost out to a bunch of unknowns like Gent in Europe ! When the draw was made, thought it was impossible for us to lose out to a mid-table club in Belgium like Gent but somehow we have done just that. This is the first time in our history that we have exit Europe to an unknown club like Gent. Previously we have only lost out to well-known and established European clubs like Dortmund, Fiorentina, Benfica, Basel, Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, PSV and Sevilla. Surely, this is the lowest point in our proud European tradition.

Pochettino and the team should take their share of the blame for this humiliating exit. Alli was naive to get the red card but he cannot be fully blamed. We still played well with 10-men but failed to make our chances count. I think Kane has to take the large part of the blame for us losing out. We relied on Kane to lead our attack and get us the goals. Instead, he played poorly, scored an own goal and wasted 2 open goal chances. And this was Kane's fourth own goal against us ! This is why I don't like attacking players defending near our goal. Maybe it is time to stop Kane coming anyway near our goal ! With Kane in such a poor form, our attack lacked the quality to trouble Gent. Son came on and improved our attack but he also wasted a one-on-one chance late in the match.

Credit to Eriksen and Wanyama for the goals. Both were well taken goals. Our midfield worked hard but again missed the creativity and tenacity of Lamela. Thought Pochettino made a big mistake with the team selection as well. Son should have started instead of the error-prone Dier. Was worried when I found out Dier was starting and it was proven right. It was Dier's crucial mistake which allowed Gent to score their second goal which killed the game off. Eriksen did well to score our first goal but he also should have done better with a few other chances including freekicks. Also thought Dembele should have stayed on as our attack got toothless after he went off.

Very disappointed with our defence for both the goals conceded. Never thought we can concede 2 goals when Alderweireld and Vertonghen are starting in defence. For some reason, they were not at their best in this match. Felt Vertonghen concentrated too much on attack. Alderweireld seemed to lack his usual sharpness in defence and attack especially with his headers. Also thought Lloris should have reacted faster for both the goals, especially the second goal.

It is really annoying that we gave ourselves a chance to progress by scoring 2 goals only to waste it with sloppy defending and attack. It is really hard to accept the way we exit both the CL and EL. It is clear Pochettino needs to learn more as a manager before he can win us a trophy. It was a big blunder by Pochettino for not buying enough quality to our squad especially a second striker which seems like a costly mistake now. Let's hope he can lift the team to do much better in the league and FA Cup for the rest of the season.

The thing is, Poch's stated style doesn't really allow for a passing 'tempo' to be maintained, as such - vertical passes are the order of the day, attacks are always to be looked for immediately after transitions, the ball must cover as much space as possible in as little time as possible, and the men capable of playing accurate long passes must be allowed to do so to spark attacks off.

For us, we're in a tricky situation - our best long passer is not Winks, not Dembele, not Wanyama, not Eriksen...but Toby. Jan isn't bad at them either. So I think, to an extent, it's natural to see the midfield being bypassed a bit, and equally natural to see us struggle to control the tempo of a game.
But this is where playing 3 at the back reduces our effectiveness as Toby's position from The central CB position kills his angle to hit the LW or LWB. To an extent it knocks Verts angle to the RWB.
I really don't think we need Dembele, Wanyama and Dier in the same team, unless we are going to play 4-3-3, with them holding the 3 mid positions, Dier looking after the RB, Dembele the LB and Wanyama holding. I would only play that against certain teams.
Dier should not be used as a CB, it's him or Wanyama.
