I did immediately think about Gomes after posting that, to be honest. And you're right, different people react to pressure or setbacks in different ways. You also make a good point about the mental strength of some of our lads.
But it does get me wondering sometimes. I'm not a Premier League footballer: hell, the Isthimian League is probably too high for me. But I, an uninspiring amateur goalkeeper, managed to turn a setback into a mental 'push', if you will. Now, Premier League footballers have to jump many, many hurdles to get to where they are: they have to deal with nerves and mental stress on a weekly basis, and have to be prepared for a career filled with crowd, media and professional scrutiny.
To do this, they have the help of full-time psychologists, supportive managers and coaching staff, and as a fall-back, their friends and family.
Everything seems to point to them being able to turn defeats into strengthening experiences much more easily than the average Joe.
But of course, that is analyzing emotion using logic, something you quite rightly pointed out is disingenuous.
Point withdrawn.

I'm assuming Dembele will be out, Parker available, Lennon doubtful.
-----------------Lloris
--Walker--Caulker--JanV--- Benny
------------Thudd-----Parker
-------------------Holtby
--Lennon [Bale] ----- Ade---- Bale [Siggy]
depending on Lennon's fitness.
An alternative, if slightly risky, might be:
-----------------Lloris
--Walker--Dawson--Caulker--- Benny
------------Thudd-----JanV
-------------------Holtby
--Lennon [Bale] ----- Ade---- Bale [Siggy]
depending on Lennon's fitness.
Risky is the word, not sure about Jan in central midfield. Don't think this is the game to test that out.
If we see the Spurs against Utd, Scum etc we will come away with something, if we see the Spurs against Wigan and Southamption we'll get torn a new one.
This is what's keeping me hopeful right now. If our run-in was QPR Reading and Wigan at home then I'd know a fudge-up was inevitable and we wouldn't be getting 9 points. We're best in adversity, and going to Chelsea with only a win being acceptable is the kind of situation where I think we'll thrive. Just look at the year we got 4th when we had to play Arsenal and Chelsea in 4 days to stay in the race and we battered 'em both.
Yes it's not really the time -- for the future, perhaps, given that we also have Kaboul and Caulker, and having seen Jan's mazy runs and eye for a goal, I think he would polish up into a pretty good midfielder. And if Parker and Dembele are not fit Wednesday, I might be tempted to play Verts as a DM. Because we need bodies in there and we are bit limited for options. Carroll's probably a better option --but not Livermore.

We can play whoever the fudge we want, wherever we want on the pitch, we're still going to take a fudging pasting.
Its obvious.
It'll be a totally non-cohesive no show. If Parker's back we'll win the pirouette's 156 - 0. Apart from that we're going to get no joy whatsoever.
It'l probably start fairly even, they'll score from their first corner after about 12 minutes and that'll be that.
I take it you won't be watching the game then.
I'll be watching the game. I'm happy with the season, think we've punched a bit above our weight with this squad. I just think we're going to get exposed and that we've been asking for a pasting for a while, we just avoided because we were playing crap teams.
I'll be praying for the best, but fully anticipating the worst.
Hudd will not get on the ball in a two man midfield versus Ramires and Mikel. If chelsea dominate the midfield then Bale will be crowded out in the middle. Holtby has struggled out wide whenever he's played there.
Most players are extremely unintelligent. The Good Lord blesses them with footballing skills, and the Good Lord Taketh away their ability to think more than 8 minutes in advance. Unless they're in the VIP area and they see a fitty. Then they'll think about ordering a Magnum of champagne so they can impress the dress off her. But that's not my point.
You are analysing this like an intelligent, rational human. Footballers are essentially cattle. They will react to the crowd, as they don't have two nubs of intellect to rub together.
