OMT * Tottenham Hotspur v Brighton *

Such a strange performance today, I get the trying to be patient thing, but even by HT you could see it was clearly getting us nowhere, Brighton completely had our number. Very disappointed in the lack of versatility in our tactics and personnel.
Agreed. We should have plan B C D E where we radically change formation

Don't have the players for that.
Especially Conte who plays a system to excellence and keeps sticking to it even when behind.

Doherty's timed power runs are crucial for instigating attacks and we clearly missed unpredictability in attack. Interesting to see how we overcome that in the rest of the games.

Not really, the focus then turns to managerial decisions on the matter. How many days off did conte give? Surely 1 is sufficient 1.5 max. And it should not allow for people to fly half way across the world and back.

Poor management in the build up to this game and very poor management during the game too. With 10-15 mins left bergwijn should have come on for davies or reguilon and a switch to 4-2-3-1. Instead with 5 mins left we got bergwijn for son and zero change to a failing system.

Management have let the club down in the build up to this game and during the game. Very poor and not to be repeated please.

Harry Kane's very public golf trip to the USA for the final day of the Masters in Augusta on Sunday was swiftly brought up by Tottenham fans on social media in the aftermath of his lethargic performance against Brighton.

football.london understands that Kane, who has been pivotal to Tottenham in recent weeks, was back in training with the rest of the squad on Tuesday, albeit a little bleary-eyed, after dashing back across the Atlantic. He still had four full days of training after his return to the UK though and plenty of sleep to be had to remove any small jet lag from such a short trip ahead of the match so excuses for his performance cannot be found there.

That was a game crying out for a creative player and a change of formation
If we had an eriksen on the bench we would have gone 3-5-2 and potentially created something more
Our issues at wing back though are painfully obvious to see
Reggie makes the runs but has no finesse or guile
Royal won’t make the runs and is petrified of being caught out of position, and of course has no attacking capability

Disappointing but we have still got those performances in us . Squad depth is a problem.
Royal is not good enough as a wingback.

I will point out Brighton away from home are a tough side to beat. They are awful at their place but away don’t cough up to many points.

Next week is the acid test for our push for top 4 must win but Brentford have hit a little purple patch and with the crowd behind them will be well up for it.

Could be pivotal with the Scum playing United and Chelski this week.United also have Liverpool.West Ham have got Chelsea. This coming week will be a big factor in race for top 4 .

Brighton haven’t lost in London and now have 25 points away from home. Very decent record

Biggest problem today was that we got nothing from our WBs and in a Conte system, that’s a killer. We were like this a month or two ago when we had the same pair as today at WB

Sess in for Reggie is a no brainer. Conte needs to work out a way to get more attacking threat from RWB whether that’s Moura, Berg, Lavinier or whoever. I feel that’s our biggest threat to our hopes of finishing 4th
This is the key. Wingbacks are so important in the Conte system. Both offered nothing going forward against Brighton. Targeting two top quality wingbacks must be our highest priority in the next window.

I agreed with what Conte said that in hindsight it was maybe one of those games where after 75 minutes we should have recognised that we werent going to score and that perhaps we should have happily taken the draw albeit that would have become an even better result after the Woolwich result. Not sure how it would have gone down in front of 55k home supporters if we'd have shut up shop with 15 mins to go against an inferior opponent?

Think I'll put this down to a bad day at the office - it was near enough the same players and tactics that had won 4 games and scored 15 goals in the process. In fairness it was a seriously bad day at the office - I really cant remember anything that was even applause worthy from within the stadium - it was really very flat from 1-11 and exaperatted by not being able to make any changes that improved the XI on the pitch.

If anything this has ruled out for me the desire to see Graham Potter as our manager one day - sure they feel great after winning at Spurs and Arsenal in 7 days but by all accounts this is the same approach for Norwich and Burnley at home - it was boutique Hodgson football.

Totally wrong. They play good football, creating plenty of chances against everyone outside the top 6. Potter isn't naive enough to think he can go toe to toe with the top 6 and changes his tactics based on who he is playing. He shut us down and got a result.

My opinion of Potter went up yesterday. They were set up so well. Didn’t allow us to turn on the ball in the middle of the park, moved as a team and didn’t give Kane an ounce of space to drop deep into. Brilliant stuff. I saw them
win at Anfield last year and they played some smashing football doing it. I don’t buy into some of the hype about Potter but I do think he’s a very good coach. Whether he’ll do well at a big club is open to question. Bigger players, bigger egos, bigger expectations. Crowds, like ours, who want to win and be entertained. But I wouldn’t be against him either. Dyche is a manager who I do respect but will only ever manage in the lower half of the table. Potter has a chance to be a top level coach IMO.

And for those Brighton fans booing them earlier in the season…have a word with yourselves.

curious, Royal actually made a lot of runs and was the spare player yet due to poor execution and/or lack of vision was not found. Again do not want to take anything away from Brighton whose tactics were perfect, their LB pushed up onto Kulu giving him no space, their RB left Son room so couldn’t get in behind while also covering Reggie and Bissouma stayed on Kane all game.

with their RB pushing up, Royal was key and I counted at least 4 times in the first half alone Royal would have been clear but the ball was passed side sides and back rather then into his run. I guess that’s where we rely on Kane’s vision and execution and your point regarding Eriksen is a good one, but can’t blame Royale for that imo he had some very good movement

Was you watching on TV?
At the game every time I looked royal was back pedalling or standing still.
Obviously TV gives you a different view point of a game
I do think players look at royal and think why bother as it will only come back to me (so take the short cut and keep the ball)

Earlier in the season we were gash. The new signings that replaced them in Jan helped put us back in contention for top 4 but they were off today - none of the subs made an impact and none of them are seen as a viable sub for Son and Kane, hence why they have played most of this game. I’m not blaming the bench for us losing, I’m blaming the starting x1 but we need genuine competition for our attacking players to allow them to be rotated but also fear phoning it in like they all inexplicably did today.
Our wing backs are shi t.

It would have no impact on him. It's not like going to the airport and taking a Ryanair flight. It'll be on a private jet where he can get a proper nights sleep.
Players jet off all the time to other countries, not a big deal in this day and age and I'd trust our0 medical department etc to know better than anyone on here if it's going to make a difference.
It is a difference when we are on the crust of CL!
He should be with the team getting them G,d... up. A massive opportunity lost for CL.The Team need a player especially like Kane to be there at this crucial time in the Premier.

Yes I was, commentator actually pointed out how often he was free as well which made me pay close attention.

his delivery isn’t great but a few runs behind forces the LB back and creates more space for Kulu so even not hitting the player has an impact

I’d agree if he could pass in the attacking third
I think our players don’t pass to him and he certainly didn’t trouble their left wing back yesterday or create and space

As for Kane it seems he has to drag us through matches week in week out with no let up otherwise the same old faces will start digging him out if he dares have an off day.

Used to be that Kane got criticised for not turning up in the big games, which is a fair argument. But now it’s any game he doesn’t turn up in no matter who the opposition is. If we lose to any opposition it’s on Kane and Son. Be interested to see if they still cop the blame if they both score and play really well but lose 3-2 to Liverpool or Arsenal in a few weeks.
