*** OMT - Tottenham Hotspur v AFC Bournemouth ***

Bad recruitment obviously.
It's been shocking pre - Paratici and about average since with some good to very good buys mixed in with a couple of shockers like Royal that I don't think was scouted that fell on our laps late on in the window and I think Nuno must have preferred Royal to Thomayasu, probably because he spoke Portuguese!
Can't see any footballing reason.

Seeing the two hapless individuals Royal and Sanchez sitting on the floor discussing / arguing what went wrong immediately after we conceded the second goal made my blood boil.
Wanted the ground to open up and swallow them to save me , the club and themselves from any further embarrassment.

Sanchez wasn't great on Saturday but I'm not sure how much I blame him for the goals. On the second one, he's not at fault. Royal has to show some desire to get there ahead of the Bournemouth lad and doesn't. That's on him for me. Sanchez is just unfortunate that he's fallen over Royal in the aftermath to be honest although it did look bad.

On the first one, their lad has done Davies for pace. Now Davies isn't a million miles from recovering but Sanchez is facing two potential sources of danger. The lad with the ball and Moore behind him. He's got to do something and can't just go all-in on one of those sources of danger or the other one potentially has an easy chance. He's got to get close enough to the lad with the ball that he can challenge him if he goes alone and cut off the passing lane to Moore. Similar to what VVD did against Sissoko and Son at Anfield a few years ago. I think that's what Sanchez is trying and he probably gambled too much on the lad with the ball being the danger. Royal could have gotten him out of a hole, which is what you'd expect of your full back (not necessarily from a wing back though) but he's too slow getting back.

I'm no fan of Sanchez - I was on here asking people to stop quoting the "haven't conceded in x games with Sanchez playing" because it was a happy coincidence rather than because of him. But I wouldn't be too hard on him for the goals on Saturday.

Poch wanted a cb with pace.
Yeah. I might be getting mixed-up in hindsight but, IIRC, we were suffering at the time from Alderweireld slowing down. I mean, his partnership with Vertonghen was still pretty damn good, but the cracks were beginning to show.

Only Spurs could spunk a record fee on an Ajax youngster with no confidence on the ball, and then follow it up with a Brazilian with zero attacking flair.

he shouldn't have been in either situation, both goals came from a cheap give away of possession with defenders high up the pitch, first Lenglet (I think), then Sessegnon, yes, better defending could have happened after this, but giving the ball away is the crime

I think that was when we'd been playing a 3 with Dier in there too, and we were getting done for pace a lot, it was an obvious weakness.

Everyone remembers the Ajax United final and bangs on about Jose targeting Sanchez, but he was an ever present in a good Ajax team, there was logic in the signing.

He'd only been at Ajax a year too, wasn't a product of their academy, he'd barely played 50 pro games before we signed him.

Yeah I agree. Sanchez just becomes an easy spacegoat sometimes on this stuff which isn't fair. On the first one, bad loss of possession, but Davies has pushed crazy high up the pitch to effectively create a 2 v 1 where Sanchez is left facing a situation where he is a distant second favourite.

Wasn't it said at the time that we wanted De Ligt from Ajax but they wouldn't sell him so we went for Sanchez as a back up option?

I mostly agree with this. I think the first goal is more on Davies for being out of position and leaving Sanchez with Hobson’s choice as the last man.

Having said that I think Sanchez did the wrong thing, he was never going to be able to block a shot from so far away. He should have stayed on his feet blocking the angle for a pass, also meant that if Tavinier took another touch then he’d be on him. The only thing he should have allowed Tavernier to do was shoot in that situation, because it was the only thing he couldn’t stop happening anyway.

the 2nd goal is on Royal not Sanchez IMO.

I think the frustration is that he’s still here when he’s been a flop for the most part. We can’t sell him if no one wants him, but it annoys fans when we can’t get rid of the worst players in the squad. Some of the criticism is probably unwarranted at times, but he makes too many mistakes at this level.

It’s not his fault he can’t pass

To be fair to Sanchez he's not started a game in a long time. You normally give players a few games to get back into the speed and intensity of real matches. Sanchez does need a transfer or loan and to play regularly. If he did, he'd likely become a very decent CB. Playing in and out of a side, he's more error-prone than he'd be if settled.

True. He's had the odd excellent game, even a spell or two when he's looked as though he'd ironed out the problems and would kick on...and then he'd make a silly mistake or get bullied by a forward. It's a hard life being a Premier League CB.

I think atm it's just a known weak link when we play Sanchez & Royal together - the two together this season when paired has seemingly always brought about a bit of calamity. Last season in the run in when Sanchez stepped in for Romero he looked fine/good so you do wonder what has changed

You can have one or the other, not both as neither can keep the ball or she the ball well enough so become weak links

we’ve had calamity with Lenglet and Sess on the other side too

Was that with Doherty at RWB rather than Royal though? I can’t remember. But having Royal and Sanchez together against anyone even half decent just doesn’t work.
