It did amaze me how many chances we spurned second half, and how selfish some of our players were when a simple pass would’ve led to an easy goal.

that said we were in control for most of the game until they scored and suddenly they got a second wind- even then we could’ve scored a couple more but a high score would’ve flattered us too much.

dier and winks weren’t great again so if we do get gedsin on loan he’ll go straight in. Really need tan guy to get fit cos with sissoko our we have no one else can drive forward from the centre.

Japhet player well as Rb but surely he’ll be cd if we can sell Aurier and get in someone like semedo can see Japheth being ahead of sanchez.

definitely need a new striker- Moura and son are ok as back ups but as yesterday showed not as first choice.

On to Soton and revenge!

Sanchez needs to stand in a skip, Dave Bentley on a nearby rooftop, tacoting a bag of balls into it from a high.

It was indeed disappointing / frustrating to see Sanchez have a poor game, after such a good game against Liverpool. He can’t seem to find consistency. I think we need to start him every game when fit for the rest of the season (need for rest aside), and see if he can iron out those inconsistencies.

Sessegnon definitely looks more like a full-back than an attacking midfielder to me.

Lo Celso did give the ball away a lot, but I’m hoping and thinking it’s just rustiness. His pass % was 90% for PSG (when playing as a CM), and 83% for Betis (when playing as an AM) - both pretty high.

I just love Lamela’s energy. Even if he can never be elite talent-wise, if he could stay fit he could be such a useful squad player for us. The weird thing is his injuries always seem to be a different part of his body! Maybe then it’s just been bad luck, and at some point he’ll get a run of fitness?
 
There were several times last night where there was space in between the CB and FB yet we were reluctant to push on and in. Sess did it (maybe) twice? One time in particular he was nearly devastating. I think we all want to see more of that but Mourinho has systems plus has Sess played with a regular defence around him? I think he will be great but we have to keep playing him and Tanganga IMO.

I think it would’ve been tough to see that on telly. I forgot how windy it was until walking down the high road afterwards; it was sharp wasn’t it? Made me think twice about how people were missing open goals from balls across the face of goal, etc...

his eyesight may be the problem with balls coming out of the floodlights?
And it was bloody windy!

It was easy to see the gale force winds on the telly because the player's shirts were fwapping around in the wind, and the wind/rain was howling against my windows and roof tiles all match.
 
What a strange game. First half we looked pretty comfortable, albeit against a team who were happy sitting back. A few chances but we certainly weren't at the top of our game.

Then, second half, something seemed to click. Our lot were making lots of quick passes in midfield...not all of them worked, but the intent was there. It was a lot easier on the eye than we've been for most of 2019. Unfortunately, the lack of confidence eventually showed. Middlesbrough finally woke up and too many of our players retreated into their shells.

Players...

Sessegnon was disappointing. He clearly has plenty of talent but he just played it safe too much. Perhaps he was told to be more defensive on that side. 6/10.

Winks was nowhere near as bad as the comments suggest, IMHO. He looked to pass it quickly, get forward, make 1-2's. Didn't always come off -- too many passes going straight to the opposition, but he's not alone. Actually, I could say the same of Lamela. 7/10.

Eriksen looked good for the odd 5 minutes, and utter dross for the rest. He should be SO much better than that. Wasted dead balls too. 5/10.

Lo Celso was busy, happy to get stuck in. It's not quite there yet but I've got high hopes for him as he settles. 8/10.

Moura was another who was alright but not outstanding. Perhaps we'd have seen more from him if his early effort hadn't gone wide? 6/10.

Tanganga was great. Played with passion and belief. 9/10 given his (lack of) experience.

Not great days for Verts and Sanchez. 6/10, but only just.

Dier, like Eriksen, is a shadow of his former self. He knows he can do better. At the moment he's neither shielding the defence nor commanding the midfield. 5/10.

Gazzaniga was solid enough. Some good saves, claimed crosses, distributed well. Minus mark for the goal, which I think had him wrong-footed. Still 7/10.

Best post in the thread, the wind on the pitch was blowing every which way but loose and it made it hard to judge a ball played long and high. And before anyone come up with the cry ( it was the same for their defenders) no it was not as we never hit long passes in the air to their CB's.

Sanchez took most ( if not all) the hit and hope long balls and yes he did struggle but most of that was down to the wind blowing in several directions.

I am not saying for one minute he had a great game but slagging him off for struggling with the conditions is way over the top. The guy has been playing well over the last few weeks and is becoming a regular and i think he deserves to be.
 
Good to win to progress to the next round of FA Cup. It was not really a convincing performance but we did well to win. We played well in the first half and should have score more than the 2 goals. Well done to Lo Celso and Lamela for scoring two well-taken goals. But we really should have scored more goals. We played poorly in the second half but we still had chances late in the match which we should have scored. It was really tense when Boro scored but we managed to win. Let's hope we will play much better when we play Southampton away in the FA Cup Round 4 next.
