What has happened to Bergy' s pace? I thought he was supposed to be iightening quick - like a youthful Lennon. Still have no idea why we bought him.

Indeed, it seems increasingly like a much of muchness buy. The potential appears to be there but right now he is simply a decent squad player when we need more.

This is the same game we always struggle in. Second string away from home with nothing really to play for against a team who treat it as a cup final.
It will be the exact same away to Ludogorets.
What matters from this game is coming away from a trip to the current Covid capital of Europe without anyone getting it.

Wow. I did not know Antwerp was the covid capital of Europe!!!

On the contrary I think he is very talented. He has a good football brain, capable of threading neat passes into tight situations, makes clever runs and works hard. He also has an edge. He played in Spurs team that was pushed to its limits by Poch, maybe it pushed him to hard. But there is no doubt for me his talent is there.

He has talent but he's not particularly versatile or suited to playing in more than one way. His key attributes are his late runs and eye for a goal. His passing is meh, he has decent vision but his execution is meh. He has no real playmaking or tempo setting attributes. Occupying that area of the pitch you typically need to be a great assister / creator or an exceptional finisher. He has the finishing side of things but not really the creation meaning there are few top sides that will pick him in that role.

He's a good player but not an exceptional one. The difference between himself and Ndombele is quite stark. That is a player with exceptional talent.

Ndombele doesn’t score at the same rate as Dele or make the clever, ghosting runs into the box. They are totally different players both with exceptional talent imho. But because of their talent they are both to a certain extent Mavericks. Jose doesn’t like too many maverick talents in his team. Dele plays in a position where there is massive strength in depth, Ndombele doesn’t.

Yes but tonight we were unrecognisable and dreadful.

That's because it was a totally different team. We put out a scratch side, that had never played together before, against a really well organised team. It was always going to be tough, especially after they went one up.

I'm in favour of playing a different line up in Europe/cups, we'll burn out if we try to play the first team every game, but we need to have a settled and balanced cup team, if we are going to have any chance of success with that approach.

I’ve never even been close to playing professional football but that seems massively harsh on Sanchez. The goal is on Davies, Sanchez has very little choice but to go to the man with the ball or he just has a free run on goal. 99% of defenders will do that and unless you are VDV facing someone with the shooting ability of Sissoko you lose the 2on 1 duel 99% of the tIme especially when you have your back to goal.

Just watch Van Dyke when he outplayed Sissisko up in Anfield last season that’s how you defend,Sanchez could have done the same.

I thought Hoddle and Hargreaves made a great point on it. Dier had a similar situation a few weeks ago in a different area of the pitch (think against Saudi Sportswashing Machine) and defended it brilliantly. Sanchez just doesn't have the awareness on stuff like that for me.

On a slightly different note mate, it’s interesting hearing Hoddle’s take on a CB’s defending, as I have just watched a re-run of the 1987 FA cup final, the defending that day by Hoddle and his fellow midfielders makes Sanchez look like Franz Beckinbauer. Remember being absolutely gutted as it was the first final I had seen us lose. Still hurts today that that supremely talented team won nothing.

Mourinho was totally ineffectual had no answers tonight.
That’s down to him but he will blame the players but sadly I think that’s what Jose does.

Wrong. If you see his post match quotes you will see he said that credit needs to go to Antwerp players and any blame should go to him.

That's my first strong memory of watching a Spurs game. My brother, fudger who made me support Spurs, told me we couldn't lose. We'd won our 7 cup finals before that and Coventry weren't up to much. Much like when he persuaded me a few years earlier to support Spurs, I believed him. Bawled my bloody eyes out that day.

Haven't watched it since. Must give it a look because I don't remember much of Hoddle or the midfield that day...I was only 7.

Coventry didn’t have the talent of the Spurs side. They just wanted it more. Our defending was atrocious. All their goals came from balls into the box where we were either out jumped or out fought before poor old Mabbs stuck out his unlucky leg.

Agreed although a few people mentioned Aurier who was our least brick outfield player. The bar was ridiculously low though.
Aurier is getting a free pass but he just jogged back after losing a tackle down his flank early second half that Hojbjerg gamely managed to rescue down by the corner flag.

It was a settled team who haven’t lost in 14 and even more at home (?) vs a mish mash of second string players, and it showed. I would still have expected more effort from those looking to impress.

Will take your word for it. Can't recall it as it took me about 15 mins to figure out he was still on the pitch in the second half. BT said he'd gone off.

Hojbjerg doesn't get a free pass either...on one of their chances he stopped (with another player) with his hand in the air for an offside that was never an offside.

All our players were brick I guess bar Hugo.

I didn’t watch the game but the team we put out was more than good enough to win and they have all apogee together this season at least once
The players clearly weren’t capable mentally for their game but it’s not the first and won’t be the last time

Two matches in a row and no shots on target
???

I get where you're coming from but purely as a matter of fact, at least two straight at the keeper first half tonight, one from Bergwijn, the other Vinicius (I think), and at least one decent one against Burnley - Son's winning header.

But full credit to Antwerp because Kane and Son also had loads blocked by what seemed an utterly impenetrable defence.

You're right about the Bergwijn chance I'd forgotten about that one. It's a bit concerning that we've struggled to really fashion any decent chances in the last two matches but I'm overly concerned. We've struggled for very different reasons.

With the two games being in succession it's easy to think of a continuing problem but in fairness it's probably right to seperate the two matches as the teams picked were so different from one another.

Need to get the result sunday and the performance to move on from the last 3 games and try to build up some form ahead of the tough run of games starting in mid Nov
