It's strange that of all the signings we made in the summer, the one Inwas most excited about ( with the exception of Bale obviously) was Doherty. Yet so far, he has probably been the most disappointing. Both our full backs offered very little going forward yesterday. I lost count of the number of times Davies either went backwards or played a really poor ball forwards. Doherty was marginally better, but our two first choice full backs at the moment are undoubtedly Reggie and ( surprisingly ) Aurier. Our back up full backs must do much better if we aren't to experience a marked drop off in quality going forward.

Burnley played well, Dyche and his lads successfully nullified our attacking threats for most of the game

BUT we found a way - THAT is strength in mentality, not giving up and keeping them out, they had chances

Hence Kane was my MOTM because he did it at both ends, but the whole team played well, strong, kept on going

BELIEVED despite dropping points to toons and wet spam

We go on - it's exciting times ! We have so many players who weren't taken or played, great cover for this tough season, and no candidate looks strong and running away with the league

Just rewatched the extended highlights of the game. Hugo is playing well this season, he's making the key saves and cutting out the errors. Plus he has the occasional miracle save in his locker.

He was great (apart from the offside goal scored by Barnes). Commanding in the box! Love to see it.

He didn't have a particularly good game yesterday, but Burnley. I think he's been good in the other games he's played for us, and he'll be a great signing.

He was poor
Him and Davies were a weak link
I’ll excuse Doherty as he normally has a man in front of him who plays as a winger, not a random run around
Davies as a left back is such a drop off attacking wise, but maybe he is better defensively as Jose said (About his aerial ability)

Davies was making up a three man defence for much of the game, so you can't expect him to be in wingback positions as frequently as Reguilon.

Could (and possibly should?) have cost us the game though. An absolutely ridiculous moment I thought.

I thought the whole team were OK overall other than Davies and Doherty who were poor. Both look a fair way behind the first choice two IMO. Pick of the other 9 for me was probably Ndombele who did something positive every time he got the ball.

Think it was a bit of bad defending and good forward player by Wood in closing down.

Davies was poor - thought Doherty defended well - was rubbish going forward though

I don’t agree
He was wide left
But when he went toward he was very hesitant and his crossing was speculative at best

Exactly. No way was he playing in a back three. He got into some great positions on the left flank and almost always passed backwards. When he did attempt a cross it was either blocked at source ( as usual with him) or went to no one. Neither full back was good and were a large reason for our turgid display even though it was Burnley. There were spaces out wide we simply didn't exploit.

I didn't say that he played in a back three. I said that we switched to a back three in some stages of the game.

Both fullbacks were used differently in this game to how we have played previously this season. I think that this was by instruction rather than just because of who was selected.

You actually said " Davies was making up a three man defence FOR MUCH OF THe GAME" . Like @Bedfordspurs I simply don't agree with this statement. Yes he had to defend but as a back four not as a back three. Who would be covering the left flank when he was defending in a three? NDombele, Son, Hoberg? I don't think so.

See the fbs getting stick for slowing it down, I call it retaining possession when there's nothing on.
Last thing we wanted to do was give them easy opportunities to hoof the ball forward quickly after a turn over.

I'm with Pirate and Bedford on this one - I thought Davies was playing as a traditional attacking full-back, same as Doherty. See positional data here (from Whoscored):

Also Davies attempted 5 crosses, vs Doherty's 4.

I genuinely think you might have been mistaking Hojbjerg for Davies at times? I noticed Hojbjerg was regularly dropping into the left-back position to make a back three, rather than Davies.
