VAR is not what is failing. It's the refs in the VAR booth that are failing. Two completely different things.
Ehhh.... It's exactly the same thing. It's not a robot or an algorithm that decides what is reviewed, it's those same refs in the VAR room. Combined it's refered to as VAR.

You have all forgotten the main ingredient that VAR is missing!

Time

and a lot of it!

We haven’t had a whole season yet!

Actually it doesn't. You've provided the perfect example of why we use statistics.

The human mind is incredibly poor at objective analysis. Our brains have evolved specifically not to do that and to apply our own subjective analysis both on the way in and out of memory. So we have hard data instead to rely on. Results that go wildly against xG are fairly few and far between, they don't happen much of the time, but our brains remember the outliers and we convince ourselves that it's normal. So we use xG to analyse events against an aggregate set of data to show that in most cases (but not all) a match would have turned out a certain way based on the chances created.
Looking at the table above 4 results followed the XG prediction and 6 didn't.

I do think XG is a reasonable reflection overall though. The problem at the moment is that there aren't enough data points. One chance from the middle of the goal (say) 10 yards out can be very different to another from exactly the same place (I.e. is the keeper still on his line or right on top of the player, is the attacker in the clear one on one or are there defenders between him and the keeper, does the player have the ball under control, are they hitting it with their preferred foot, is it hit first time, is a defender putting pressure on, etc, etc). Over the thousands of chances from that position the XG might be (say) 0.6 but a team could have four shots from that position in the game and be given an XG of 2.4 as a result, ehenbin actual fact all four of the chances were 0.1 type chances due to one or more of the sorts of factors I mentioned above and the team was most likely to score zero goals.

Ahh, good morning and greetings from a sun-kissed city five time zones west.

What a good feeling it is to wake up the morning after a big Spurs win. There's spring in the step, bounce to the ounce, luster in the cluster and lead in the pencil.

Why... why it's almost... do I feel a song coming on?

What a voice

It's like giving my grandma a Ferrari to drive. If she smashes it into a tree, it's not the Ferrari's fault. It's my grandma's.

You give refs better tools to do their jobs. If they fvck up, it's not the tools' fault. It's the refs'.

What a voice

My parents would dance around the living room to this guy's music. Same with Sinatra. Some things that get into a person's brain at a young age just never seem to vanish. It's not my kind of music but this seemed like a good time to reference one of Nat's classics. And it's short.

Have a read of how Caley puts his xG together and how statsbomb do theirs. Much of that is taken into account.

Consider yourself lucky, too many people have no idea how much great and influential music there was before they were born.

You make your own luck
People said we were lucky vs wolves too as they were dominant but had less shots on target again
The theme here is take your chances and you will win

look at the game vs Bayern... we didn’t take our chances and it cost us

the XG shows that by the way for those fans of stats
To me it doesn't matter much what you call it, luck, being clinical, being wasteful. To me there's an element of luck there as one team has little influence on the finishing of the other team. Gundogan could have taken a perfect penalty, not much Mourinho or our players could have done. Bergwijn could have skied his shot, without Guardiola or City doing anything different.

Regardless of what you call it I think those stats at least try to form an objective perspective to what we could all see (City creating way more and better chances). I find that quite interesting, though more so when the xG numbers differ more from my impression.

Either way, impression or stats, you can't rely on clinical finishing and the opponents missing chances to win. That's why I thought the Liverpool performance overall was better, even though we lost that one and won this one.

It is great to get our first win over the big teams in more than one year ! We badly needed this win over Emirates Marketing Project after failing to beat any of the top 6 teams since beating Chelsea in November 2018. Our performance was not really convincing and we rode our luck but we took our chances well. Of course, we were greatly helped by the red card to Emirates Marketing Project. We badly needed that luck ! Also, it is always better to play poorly and win instead of playing well and lose. More satisfying is the fact we managed to keep the clean sheet !

Credit to Bergwijn and Son for the goals. We didn't really create many chances but we managed to score from the ones we created. Good to see our attack being clinical in front of goal for once ! It was brilliant the way Bergwijn chested the ball down and volleyed into goal. Thought it was too soon to start Bergwijn but he proved he was ready to play in the PL. But Berwijn do need a better goal celebration ! Son scored his third goal in 3 consecutive matches but he was poor apart from that. Alli and Moura didn't have much impact while Lamela didn't have much time to impress after coming on in the second half.

Our midfield had a decent match. Winks and Lo Celso worked hard and played well in patches. But the midfield were controlled by Emirates Marketing Project other than that. This match shows we do still need a defensive midfielder to control the midfield. Our midfield did improve after Ndombele came on in the second half. Lo Celso had another good match but he still needs to imrpove his finishing. Credit to Winks for getting the Emirates Marketing Project player the red carded with his run in the second half. But still not convinced of Winks as he makes too many errors.

Well done to our defence for keeping the clean sheet but we rode our luck. Special mention to Lloris as we have now kept clean sheets in both the league matches since Lloris returned from injury. Credit to Lloris for saving yet another penalty. Lloris has now saved 3 of 4 penalties he has faced for us. But it was naive by Aurier to concede the penalty like that. We were also fortunate as Emirates Marketing Project hit the post twice, both times due to errors by Sanchez. It would have been very annoying if Sanchez had scored the own goal late in the match but fortunately it only hit the post.

This win over Emirates Marketing Project have really saved our pride. Apart from Liverpool, the rest of the league have been too inconsistent this season, beating each other at will. But before this match, Aston Villa and Spurs were the only teams without a win over the top 6 teams this season. Fortunately, we have now managed to get our first win over the top 6 this season. With this win, we are now only 4 points behind 4th-placed Chelsea. Let's hope this win will boost our confidence to go on a long winning run to get back into the top 4 race.

But there’s technique, focus, skill, pressure and work rate that have to be factored in

he missed the penalty as it was poor technique
Stevie scores as he used great skill and technique
We dealt with the pressure of their attacks well. They delay with the minimal pressure we gave them poorly

what costs city again and is the inability to defend

what helps us when we play city is we have learned that take your chances and you will win

city’s actual defensive stats on shots against to conversion are really high because of how good they can be when you get a chance their generally a higher quality. We haven’t actually had the higher quality chances but the quality of our finishing has done that for us

How was Sanchez at fault for blocking a shot and it hitting the bar? That’s his job, blocking a goal bound shot and making it off target

Villa nailed on to beat us in two weeks then.
