The other consolation I guess is that every other team is brick at centre back especially now VVD is long term injured.

The main consolation for me, and it's more than just a consolation, is just how far we've come in (less than) a year. To be at a point now where its really only one position, arguably only one player, missing in the jigsaw is amazing.

A year ago it was a dumpster fire, disjointed, unbalanced squad, but with massively talented and even supreme quality individual players.

Now we've fixed so many positions and roles. Quality in so many positions, backups and alternatives, options, a standout bench in every game. We've fixed so many aspects of our game. Yes there is work left to be done. But the difference is astonishing.

If I'm looking at this season (and perhaps getting ahead of myself), I see it as an opportunity rather than a consolation. With the way we are looking in midfield/attack and the way the league etc is looking, we could easily look back and say 'if the defence were half decent we'd of cleaned up' , everyone else's defence looking poor is that opportunity.

Yes, this would be a huge step forward. I feel like a player can play 60 minutes every few days... but as they push into 70 mins, 80 mins, 90+ it just drains them more and more until they are red-lining and straining and cannot be expected to keep performing every few days.

Just watching the highlights now, and wow, I voted for Lucas, but Vinicius was really good, wasn't he? Højbjerg as well, another excellent game by him.

Also, that second goal - the run Reguilon makes before passing it to Bale. To have a player of that calibre being able to attack from left back down the flank, that's going to be an immense weapon for us. Such a threat! You just can't prepare properly for a guy like that - make a run like that and all kinds of opportunities can open up further up the pitch. Love it! What a player Reguilon is.

It's really impressive. You can say what you want about Mourinho and Levy and what have you, but in a year's time he's manage to strengthen and renew the squad no end with quality players all around - and it's clearly making a difference out on the pitch. Not trying to have a dig at Poch, really, but we did buy a lot of dross under him.

At least Son, Toby, Wanyama, Dier, Ndombele and Lo Celso were quality whilst Davies, Trippier, Sanchez and Moura were decent enough. At the end of the day he got us to a CL Final and four top four finishes on less than peanuts at a time when rivals were spending gazzillions.

For me he was and always will be magic, you know! :D

Yeah, as I said, not trying to dig out Poch. I don't think Levy necessarily "settled for second best" though, but who knows. Just trying to say that I'm delighted with the recruitment Mourinho and Levy have done.

Sorry wasn't suggesting you were digging Poch out but I strongly feel the comment is valid. For his first couple of seasons Poch got some, but not all, of the players he wanted but often had to accept compromises. Window after window Poch kept pleading with Levy to be 'brave' and stuff. But the Chairman consistently played hard ball, prioritising the new stadium, which I suppose you could argue was understandable to an extent.

Pretty sure Levy even admitted he'd taken his eye off the ball. It wasn't until Poch's last window that he got the players he wanted - Lo Celso, Tanguy and Sessegnon - but by then it seems likely it was already too late, Poch had lost his mojo.
 
Their passing through our lines, and playing across the pitch. good teamwork and preparation for lots of effective movement. Failed ultimately at the individual level with what to do in the final 3rd, but we've looked that way most of last season especially before Jose and the mid season recruits arrived.

Whist I think it’s fair to question a few of a Poch’s purchases, Lo Celso and Ndombele look decent so it might be a case of considering the increased budget and wage bill available post the stadium build? I say this as someone who never really understood the strategy with Poch’s signings, from astute deals like Toby and Wanyama but blowing c70m on Sanchez and Sissoko. Was he really behind the French wingers, Janssen, Clarke and a couple of others who arrived but rarely played? We may have to observe his signings at his next club to get a better idea, it does seem to me that Mourinho is the first manager to have either the clearest idea of what he needed or gotten the majority of what he asked for from Levy. Even the Gedson signing makes some sense, if it greased the wheels for other Mendes influenced opportunities.
 
The BIG difference it seems is that after two barren years leading up to the CL final not only has Levy released the purse strings, he's also decided to bring in the players his manager actually wants.

Poch got his wishlist of Ndombele, Lo Celso and Sessegnon, and Jose his main targets (within restraints): Hart, Doherty, Hojbjerg, Bale, Reguilon, Vinicius and Rodon.

Quite a turnaround, that.
 
What annoyed me with Pochettino were the consistent statements that it was difficult to get players who would improve the quality at Spurs!

You have a first team squad of Lloris, Walker, Toby, Jan, Rose, Wanyama, Dembele, Eriksen, Alli, Kane, Son and you buy players that can't challenge them or act as effective deputies?

To me that statement increased complacency and player lack of focus.
 
It is good to start our Europa League group stage with a win and a clean sheet. LASK were poor and didn't really trouble us. But we did enough to get this comfortable win. Credit to Moura, Son for the goals and Vinicius for the 2 assists. Too bad Bale didn't score but he did force the own goal. Also, wish Vinicius had scored a goal rather than getting the 2 assists. This is also our first clean sheet of the season in all competitions. Hope we can keep more clean sheets after this.
