Official - Holtby

Remotely better than Paulinho? is that really a question?

Yes it is. Holtby is yet another of those cult heroes who built a following on nothing. What has Holtby done in our colours? At least Paulinho scored more goals!

The guy has been a total waste of space in Germany; pure and simple brick. Yet posters like you give the impression that he will be our saviour when in fact there is only one place he needs to be - out the exit door.

I get the feeling Holtby's 'passion' is all for show and a way of blinding fans to his glaring technical ineptitude.

As opposed to being both technically inept AND lacking any real passion. Not like we don't have at least some players who fit that description....;)

holtby has got a good first touch, and plays a mean one-two. i see him as competition for Mason. both covering a lot of ground and supporting play mainly.

holtby vs mason - what do you think?

Problem with Holtby is that he covers a lot of ground everywhere but the position he's supposed to be playing in.

I liked his passion just as much as everyone else, but you're right, he's not an overly gifted player. Wouldn't improve us much if we got him back.

I like him, I don't think he's the answer, but he isn't any worse than what we currently have and you know he'll work his nuts off

It's quite interesting that two players most fans agree on as very hard working (on the pitch at least) have been shipped out on loan, both Holtby and Lennon. Despite Pochettino's focus on work rate, effort, pressing etc.

There was an good interview with Schneiderlin while Pochettino was still at Southampton. One of the things he mentioned was how Pochettino spent a lot of time on the training ground on relatively small details on how the players pressed and moved. He said a difference of a yard or two could make the difference.

It is true that Holtby works his nuts off, but he's always seemed to lack discipline/positional maturity/whatever you want to call it. Going by what AE wrote in this thread on the previous page it seems to still be an issue for him according to Hamburg fans. There were rumours at least at the time Lennon was disappearing from match day squads and then sent out on loan that there had been disagreements between him and Pochettino on how he should defend. Again, effort on the pitch might not be the issue, rather willingness and capability to learn how to press and work diligently as part of the team unit.

Not sure Holtby is a great fit...

Quality is always a difficult measure, teams need players that turn up every game, and work for 90 mins ..

Lennon/Holtby both do that, and I am quite certain that given those two instead of Paulinho/Dembele/Townsend/Capoue this season as our options, we would probably be at least 3-5 points ahead of where we are currently.

Obviously Poch may have played the long game on this one, just think it cost us in the short term.

Quite possibly.

I think Holtby could have been a useful option in one of the attacking 3 positions (perhaps particularly the #10 position, he seems less effective wide). Of the two deeper positions I don't think he can play the more holding role (Bentaleb's current role) so I don't think he would have been an effective replacement for Capoue. It would have to be the Mason role, but I don't think he's been particularly good in that role, and he doesn't seem disciplined enough. I would rather have Mason, and I would rather have Dembele. Although Holtby could have been a useful option when we needed more creativity.

Would much rather Holtby coming off the bench in the 75th minute then any other player we have had on it recently.

Would have to disagree with that, what has held him back is the injurys he has had. IF he can stay fit he will be a very good player.
He has also been held back by the fact that he is an utter gobbrick whose extra-curricular activities (alleged and proven) have been less than positive on his ability to play football.
