Betfair to launch fixed-odds betting website

Betfair is taking on traditional bookmakers at their own game by launching a fixed-odds betting service in time for the Euro 2012 football tournament.

The betting exchange operator, whose peer-to-peer gambling revolutionised the industry, has long acknowledged that it is at a competitive disadvantage when it comes to offering bets in running or “ante-post” wagers, where traditional bookies can price up an event months before it takes place.

That is because the peer-to-peer betting model generally only builds liquidity close to an event and struggles to offer fast bets “in play” on such things as the outcome of a penalty shoot-out or a Wimbledon tie-break.

By installing its own fixed-odds platform, Betfair believes it can cater for all the betting needs of its 4m customers, who currently place 30pc of their wagers with rivals because of the exchange model’s limitations.

The new fixed-odds site has been developed by OpenBet, the software group behind similar sportsbooks at William Hill, Paddy Power and SkyBet. OpenBet has provided various technology to Betfair since 2008.

Nick Hagen, Betfair’s sports operations director, said: “We know from our own research that we lose 30pc of our customers’ sports betting wallet to the competition. Why should customers have to go elsewhere and why would we willingly let this large chunk of business walk out the door?”

He said that “thanks to some clever design work on the website and the growth of our internal trading team”, Betfair’s punters will be able to “toggle” between the exchange and the fixed-odds platform. Betfair has been testing the new service in Cyprus.

Mr Hagen acknowledged that there was additional risk in fixed odds. He said customers and shareholders are bound to ask: “Are we going to lose our shirt?”

However, he said Betfair had built a new Dublin-based trading team, headed by former Ladbrokes executive Craig Mucklow, and was not new to risk products as it already offers some permutation bets.

David Loveday, OpenBet’s chief executive, said: “We think this will help Betfair penetrate new markets. There are certain markets that don’t really know what an exchange is. Offering fixed-odds will give them a way in.”

Ivor Jones, an analyst at Numis, said Betfair’s new service would “dramatically expand the range of bets available”.

Haven't posted in this thread for a bit. On 91 minutes of the city/qpr match I was ?ú420 richer. Then it was gone. On 87 minutes I was ?ú250 richer as I had cole 1-1 score cast then it was gone.

Bit tinkled off tbf.

Dayo, what's happening with Eurovision this year? This is the bet I look forward to you posting the most every year!

Sweden are clear fav's, just listened to their song on you tube and it is actually bit of a tune!

*sad post alert*

On the night of Eurovision I actually sit with a pen and paper and give all songs a mark out of 20 and then look for a good outsider bet compared to how I marked them. Can't remember who it was last year but I managed to pick two big outsiders at good prices and had them both finish in the e/w places. I was half tempted this year to go through all the songs before hand on youtube but I can't quite bring myself to do it.

"Big Brother" and I'm a celebrity" is where there's money to be made. You just have to think like an idiot and it's quite simple.

Still gutted I didn't have a bet on American Idol. The bloke I picked at the start to win is now in the final and is big odds on favourite, but I didn't bother having a bet.

I now await Marky's post mocking my betting habits :D

That's not hard for me :)

I've had a bet on eurovision the last two years, get 4 places so go with 4 countries. I always cover either Norway or Denmark, Sweden are too short. Then just go for the countries with quite a few neighbours!

If I could I would lay the UK for every penny I own. We're never going to win for political reasons and on top of that old Engelbert can't sing for brick anymore.

I remember when he was announced, apparantly he is massive in Eastern Europe and the Euro Asia countries, so you never know

His tip for the Senior PGA Championship

wooooah there, they aren't tips. First one should be rubbish but i'm sticking with my gut.

Just my picks for the day, I've backed them all in an e/w lucky 15. I don't like feeling responsible for others losing money.

Pick all 4 horses and then on the betslip there should be multiple options to choose from. I've never used WH so i'm not sure what the lay out is like but i'll have a look.

When you've selected all 4, on the right hand side you will see your betslip with your selections, underneath that there will be a few green boxes, the bottom one says "lucky 15". Click on that and it should open that selection up for you to enter your stake. There's also an e/w box you can tick but it means you will have to double your stake.
