i believe there were rumours last window? but also now with the rebuilding at R Madrid with mourinho, who knows what can happen.

interesting that we are not linked with their cast offs this window

Xavi will come good under De Zerbi. He's already show he can perform. Now with stability he'll develop more consistency, and we will play to his strengths moving the ball quickly and opening space for him.

Challenge is we won't know that until the end of the season.

As it is, we are going into a season with Maddison who hasn't played 90 minutes in over a year, Xavi who we likely won't see in first half of season, and Deki as somewhere inbetween.

It's a huge risk to not go for an alternative, and yes that may mean a hard decision about one of them in January or at end of season

De Zerbi may not want a tippy tappy ten.
He might play one of several formations that don't need precisely that.

Fair enough, but point still holds

- Maddison, Deki, Xavi are all unknowns for #10 role in terms of fitness/availability/form going into this season

Who else do we have to play #10? Gallagher?

Could Kudus perhaps play there? I know that creates another issue on the right but he looks like the type that can.

He has played there but as you said, creates another issue.

We have struggled in last few years because we walk into seasons with a reasonably deep squad but being light on coverage in one or two positions. LB & LW come to mind.

I'd be very concerned if our plan to cover the #10 role is reliant on Maddison plus 3 other players who are currently injured, seems a bit of negligence.

When is Xavi due back? Maddison isn’t a bad option though. So long as Xavi and or Kulu make it back sooner rather than later. Maddison is good in shorter spells. He’s also a bit light weight and I feel at his best when playing a run of circa 10 games. After that he seems to fall off maybe. Kulu is or was the most robust, really hope he makes it back! 💪

Xavi is slated for 2027 return date, and that's without setbacks.

True but do you hinestly see us getting another high level no 10 with the possibility of 4 no 10s by the start of 2027? When there are other positions that need reinforcing? Unless it's someone like MGW who is also equally comfortable as an 8...

Gallagher as the #10 in this team will always be brick because he is the 4/5th most technically sound outfield player.

Kinsky
Porro
Danso VDV Udogie
Palhinha Bentancur
RKM Gallagher Tel
Richarlison

In this team where he is the 9th/10th most technically sound player is a different story. He’s not required to be part of the build up. His focus is on pressing and hitting the box.

Porro JPVH
VDV Udogie
Fernandes Tonali
Kudus
Gallagher Savinho
Solanke

I think we have to look at this summer in 3 phases. The first is about getting the early business done. The second is about RDZ getting into pre-season itself at the start of July. The third is about strengthening for the start of the season.

I'm gonna use Richi as an example of what actually happens. We had every Spurs fan calling him a crock and berating his injury record for quite a long period of his Spurs tenure. Then he steps into the 26/27 season and suddenly looks robust. I think we all know that if he just had a season like the 2 before with injuries then we would be playing Championship this season.

So thinking about this summer, RDZ will absolutely need to get Madds, Kudus and Kulu involved in pre-season before he feels like they can be genuine squad players for an entire season. He'll also know that we're 19 league games plus league cup before the new year and then another 19 games plus hopefully 2 cups for the rest of the campaign.

Within that is the similar dynamic to what we saw with England tonight. In certain games, we might be better off with Gallagher at 10 because the PL is so attritional. That grafting number 10 might just be the difference. Tonight, you could tell that the type of game it was didn't suit certain players. I thought Kane was sensational against Croatia. I knew after 5-10 mins tonight that Kane was either going to come alive in a key moment or just be a passenger. It was the latter and nobody should be surprised as we've seen it all before. It is the manager's choice to forfeit some class at times and go for the functional approach. RDZ might hold Madds on the bench and let Gallager play 10. He might also take the Tuchel approach and wait for the magic moment instead of playing the Watkins or Toney types. Tuchel stuck with Kane and lived with the consequences.
