Tottenham still eyeing Louis Van Gaal as manager despite giving Tim Sherwood the job
Chairman Daniel Levy said to have been highly impressed by Holland boss during almost six hours of talks but will have to wait until after the World Cup
Tottenham's talks with Louis van Gaal will continue in the New Year.
The Holland boss is set to meet Spurs chairman Daniel Levy again in January. The duo had talks last Sunday, within hours of Sunday Mirror Sport exclusively revealing that the 62-year-old Holland coach was on the White Hart Lane wanted list.
Levy flew by private jet to Holland last Sunday morning and was taken by car to Van Gaal’s exclusive penthouse *apartment in the Dutch seaside resort of Noordwijk.
They spent almost six hours in talks, and watched the North Londoners' victory at Southampton on television, before Levy headed home.
Van Gaal insisted he could not job-share the Spurs job with his role as Holland’s head coach. And the following day Levy gave the Tottenham manager’s job to Tim Sherwood on an 18-month deal.
But informed sources in Holland insist Levy was highly impressed with Van Gaal and that the interest in him joining Spurs after the World Cup finals remains intact.
Van Gaal presented Levy with a detailed dossier of his blueprint for the White Hart Lane club's future. He based it along the lines of the impressive work he did at Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
In Holland, football insiders are convinced Van Gaal will join Spurs.
Ruud Gullit, the former Chelsea boss, said: “I am really curious how Van Gaal will do when he arrives. It makes me want to follow everything he is going to do and change.
“Van Gaal has his own style. He is so strong and so dominant. But of all the clubs in the Premier League, Tottenham will suit him better than any other.
“Why? Because Tottenham has always been a footballing side. They have gone back to defensive football and playing with a kind of fear to lose.’’
Gullit added: “The great thing about Van Gaal is that he will not want new players. He thinks there is enough quality there. Spurs have a good squad.
“‘You can do more with that squad’, is his motto. Right now they won’t be able to bridge the gap on the League leaders. They have to start playing in a different style if they want to achieve things.”
During his career Van Gaal has been a winner and will not be intimidated by taking on Wenger, Pellegrini or Mourinho.
dingdong Advocaat, the former Holland boss, said: “Tottenham is a fantastic club who are very wealthy and he can achieve what he has done elsewhere. Van Gaal is a guy who will add something in the Premier League.’’
Gullit understands why many English fans want their club to appoint an English manager.
“They want to go back to English coaches,” he said. “So in that way I would love a guy like Sherwood to do well. But right now he could still do with the presence of Van Gaal.’’
