I don't knock any of that mate at all, but we don't know for certain, so its futile to wind ourselves up on things. If come end of window we have not
done bits in the window, then I will be upset, till then I put this down to par for the PL

I’m really not wound up. I just want us to win the league. I’m looking for signals that we’re trying to do that. Booking a medical for a Forest player and then failing to get the deal done because they decide to sign a new contract with Forest doesn’t suggest that we’re gearing up for a title charge.

I may be wrong on that. We do have the rest of the window to go. But I don’t much like what the result of this deal says about how we’re moving so far.

And that’s…comforting to you? I don’t much like the idea that we go for a player, and aren’t confident that we can offer a more attractive proposition than their selling club. Especially when we are Spurs, and our Chairman is saying we need to win the league. And Forest were in the Championship pretty recently.

He was on £80k a week. We obviously offered him a decent contract hence why he was willing to join us. Better than £200k a week though? No.

It's not about comfort, it is what it is.

By a chairman who's probably threatened to kill MGW.

We've noticed you are looking for signals. Asking is this time different? Trying to convince yourself and others that it is.

Sorry but it isn't. There is no comfort.

There’s an ignore function on this forum. You can use it for me, since discussing the future of the club and the level of ambition we are displaying on a discussion forum about Spurs seems to rile you up so much.

If there is no comfort, and it’s not different, and we’re gonna continue to be at that level below the title challenging sides in your view, then great. I’m glad that works for you. Just ignore me! I find this idea of needing to constantly paint Spurs in the best light, or to just say ‘we don’t know’ all the time to be quite frustrating. I’m allowed to criticise, or try and think about where we’re going next based on the information we do have.

Why would i put you on ignore?

It is ok to disagree with each other. You can even argue as long as you aren't insulting or rude or take it personally.

We don't need a safe space or comfort.

He is now one of the highest paid players in the league and therefore the planet
And he will have a clear release cause (whereas this one may have been ambiguous) and he will look to move next summer (it’s a 3 year contract)
Can’t say I blame him if he is happy where he is at

Out of curiosity, when Levy made that statement did you think he meant for this season we should be challenging?

Not necessarily. I’m also not holding Levy to a timeline exactly. I’m just saying that I want us to see us push on and win the league. Would love it to be in the next 2-3 years.

So I’m looking for signals that we’re gonna push to do it. Signing Kudus and MGW in the same week with the promise of more to come would have suggested we were serious about pushing on. Not getting this deal done, I think it just suggests we’re still at the level slightly below the clubs wanting to truly challenge.

When you say ‘we’ve noticed you saying X’ it feels a bit personal to be honest. Like I’m against this wider group that you are representing.

I’m fine disagreeing with people. But you seem to come back at a lot of my posts with ‘we just don’t know’ or ‘it is what it is’. I am a fan of Tottenham, but I want us to push on. It is what it is isn’t enough for me. And we just don’t know would render this whole forum pointless, other than to praise or criticise players on match days.

We ain't gearing up for a title charge, I made peace with that a long time ago

Agree. But do you think it would have been the same result had a Chelsea or Arsenal been in for him?

True. I think we also have to consider we finished 17th last season. That might put some players off. We all hope it’s an aberration but we clearly have issues that need to be fixed for us to finish so far down the table. We should be optimistic going into the season but also with a degree of realism. I expect us to challenge for the top 6. I think top 4 would be an unbelievable result whereas in previous seasons we would have been disappointed to have finish outside the top 4.

Ok that’s fair.

It would be absolutely fantastic if we can challenge in that timeframe but we’re well short of that at the moment. To get there we first need to raise our floor before adding the stardust to raise our ceiling.

I really like MGW and I’m disappointed it didn’t happen. But he would have been a floor raiser. I’m comfortable with us not paying 200k a week for someone that’s not a difference maker. We need to save those wages for top talent.

Maybe Levy shouldn’t say that’s the aim then. He could just be vague and say “we want to be a top team and compete with the top clubs blah blah blah” or some other BS but stop short of saying we need to win the league and the CL. Or if you are going to say it then act like it. Poch even said years ago “we need to act like a big club” and in some ways we do but in other areas we’ve been found wanting for a while.

Agree with this and it’s good to see you posting on here again! It’s great to have diversity of opinion. I get frustrated when fans refuse or are reluctant to put hypothetical timeframes on how much longer ENIC should get before fans justifiably run out of patience. Especially when he’s been in charge for 24 years! 24 years! I’d understand if he ENIC took charge in 2020 but 24 years is more than long enough to plan and set out what you want to achieve. I really don’t get why so many fans are so afraid of how things would be if we had different ownership like we’d end up going out of business in 5 years.

Totally. 24 years is a crazy long time. And I think in about 19 of those years you can say that overall it was pretty amazing progress. But it is fair to ask what is next.

Just like players have their level, and clubs sometimes need to make the tough decision to move on from them. Or just like ENIC thought they were levelling up from Jol to Ramos. Managers have a level or a timeframe too. I’m not sure why we can’t apply the same sort of analysis to ENIC. They have no doubt served us well. And I would say we’ve been extremely lucky to have Levy. But if the environment changes around them, or they reach a point where their playbook doesn’t necessarily work to get us to the next level, then it’s ok to look at that.

On MGW, I think the likelihood his agents messed up in revealing the clause, Spurs thought they could rush it through before Maranakis could get a response strategy in place, and we’d get away clean.

The fact that he’s signed a new deal means that Forest likely did have a point on the confidentiality of the clause. If we had any recourse to push this deal forward, I feel like we would have. So I think the main ‘fault’ in this deal lies with MGW’s agents, who overplayed their hand and realised the best option for them was to get more money out of Forest and ideally get a big move next year.

My thoughts exactly. The overall trajectory has been an upward curve but the last 5-6 years have undoubtedly been mostly a backwards step in terms of league position, I accept there will be fluctuations, even giant clubs like United, Liverpool and Arsenal have hit close to rock bottom in the last 10 years or so. But are they the right people to take us to the next level? It’s a fair question.

One thing I could never figure out is why we didn’t just bid a few mill under the clause and then negotiate from then on? If we eventually hit the number that matches his release clause then we’d be in the clear right?

We’re back to the really simple answer
Nothing is next for ENIC unless someone buys them out
And that has never looked likely
So they are here until that
Happens
