^^ Most recent report was on Saturday, citing HLN as source. According to that, West Ham have pulled out, realising they can't compete with us, but we're refusing to meet OL's minimum asking price of €40m. There's a surprise.

OL need money.... We need a forward.... They have a forward that we want.... The forward they have that we want wants to come to us.... The forward that they have that we want that wants to come to us will also have others wanting him....

I can see this poker game having a few more rounds of betting yet before we get to the call.

The problem we have is that the player signed a new contract earlier in the season so they can afford to hold out

With almost no deadwood to cash in on to balance the books, I always doubted we'd spend £30m this summer, let alone on one player

We wouldn't spend £30million on one player this summer. It'd be staged over at least two years.

Did we spend the Townsend money?

We have

Carrol
Mason
Fazio
and possibly Chadli to get rid of aswell.

So let's assume Townsend brought in the £12 million widely reported.
Fazio will bring in what?.... £4 million or so?
Yedlin - probably a similar amount to Fazio. (surely we would expect Sunderland to pay that much for a first choice right back?)

That's around £20 million in the kitty.

The rest will depend on who we choose to get rid of, I guess the potential candidates are as follows (and I would only expect 2 or a maximum of 3 of these players to be sold):

Mason - £10 million
Bentaleb - £12 million
Carroll - Is he still in contract?... If so then £4 million.
Chadli - £12 million
N'Jie - £10 million (I'm not saying we should get rid of him having not really seen him but Poch might have somebody out there that he would prefer)
Pritchard - £8 million
Son - £18 million

Of the above I would be happy for us to sell Mason (who IMO is neither a proper number 4 or number 8 and not quite good enough to be a number 10 for a team at our level), Carroll (a tidy player, but not physical enough for our midfield and I doubt ever anything more than a lower or mid table PL player) and Chadli (doesn't suit our pressing game) which would bring in about £25 million.

The other alternative would be sell a 'crown jewel' such as Eriksen, who would probably fetch around £40 million or so. However I would rather lose some of the squad ballast and use that money to strengthen.

With £55 million, we could bring in Janssen, Wanyama and Boufal and still have a significant amount of change left over.
