Memphis Depay

IIRC Lennon played what was probably his best match for us under Jol in that position. Was it against Chelsea? Can't remember now.

He also used to play more centrally as a youth player. I remember seeing him play in a central attacking role for England U16's in the Victory Shield. Obviously had pace even then but his ability to pick a pass also stood out.

No, my point then was that regression to mean generally takes place after a small handful of really good performances. And it did to some extent - the season ended and fortunately the dinotard was sacked before we could see what would happen past that.

Small sample sizes on their own aren't much use, but in that many minutes of football I'd expect to see some showing of ability.

Hmmmm - by how much did the number of minutes that Sherwood was in charge for differ from the number of minutes that Townsend and Chadli played for us last season?.... I would imagine they were reasonably similar? (although I could be wrong).... Are you the official adjudicator of when a sample size becomes big enough to be counted as a reasonable stat to use?

Sherwood's record was pretty similar over the course of the season I thought?.... I don't remember us doing really well and then badly dropping off at the end.... All I remember is quite a lot of wins, a few draws and a few losses - all dotted about his period in charge.

First let's just try Townsend as LWF in Poch's 4231

I don't like Townsend on the left at all. For someone who can't cross, sending him away from goal is a pretty futile exercise.

Wasn't it nearly a decade ago now? Well 8 years to be precise.

So the main man says he has had no contact with Spurs yet people still think we are going to sign him? :-k

Maybe this is why the majority of the forum always feel the club let them down when not completing deals for players we were never in for?

He can cross very well. Has two good feet. What has let him down in the past is decision making and tactical awareness. If Poch can improve those aspects of his game, we'll have a very useful player on our hands.

Agreed - I don't know where this view that Townsend cannot cross comes from.... I think the problem is more that he DOESN'T cross (or at least doesn't cross the ball at the right time) as opposed to him not being able to do so. Like I said before - all of Townsend's deficiencies should be able to be drastically improved by good coaching. Whether or ot the player wants to take in the input from the coaching is another matter, although I have previously read that he is a very dedicated and a good trainer, so one would hope that he is open to good input.

Did I imagine that chance that Paulinho missed? (it is possible).

Were you at the game that day - or are you using pure status for your argument?

You haven't imagined it, he created two openings for Paulinho. One he hit the post from and the other he put Soldado in who squared to Paulinho but I think a Chelsea player managed to get a foot across him before he could tap home.

No one's saying that we will sign him. Personally, I doubt that it will happen. But PSV denying that Spurs have made contact doesn't mean that Spurs are not interested. It's a current story.....so what on earth is wrong with people discussing it? :-k

Maybe this failure to understand the difference between discussion and conviction is why you seem to adopt a bah, humbug attitude to any potentially exciting story concerning the club?

Massively, massively underrated passer for us I think. Especially those little first time passes around the corner or being the 1 in a 1-2.

His weighting of the ball for short passes is very good.

The more variables involved, the larger the sample size is required to be. When considering the performance of a single player and comparing to the performance of another single player, the variables are far fewer than when looking at the overall performance of a team/manager.

A good example being that Ade having a handful of monster games at the start of a manager's tenure might make said manager look really good. Ade regresses, so do the performances, manager turns out not to be the messiah after all.

Conversely, if Townsend puts in a handful of monster performances it shows that he has it in him to produce a monster performance.

We have a player like that coming through, Marcus Edwards his name.

0.6 accurate crosses per match (15 accurate out of 78 attempts). I'm not sure what the rate is for other players, but it sounds a lot like his shooting - doesn't lack willingness to try but could do with a bit of ability.

I wasn't at it but I certainly watched it - maybe it was another match or another player.

It's here at 1:55

There's also another before that started with him at 1:05. He's had more standout games but this was a very mature performance, always making the right decisions, something people had been wanting to see. We lost our way when he went off, coincidentally being replaced by Chadli.
