Wanyama's only 27! A bit of spaghetti, some light exercise, a cybernetic knee upgrade and he'll be fine, even if it takes a couple of years. Would hate to see him leave.

I do rate Dier but is not yet a top class defensive midfielder imho. I felt he didn’t defend well for Toreiro’s goal but then minutes later made a great clearance as last man. He is still developing though and would benefit from a top class midfieldernext to him.

He was caught out on his wrong foot and slid to block with his right... it wasn't good

Its basic errors that cost us so many times. Not enforced ones. Im ok with conceding a worldie or even just a good team goal but this year we have conceded so many basic goals, and a lot from set pieces

Central midfield is the most important position really. That's where you hold off pressure and control the game (so we need possession and aggression in there). If you're weak there it affects the defence and attack a lot. Defence gets panicked because there is no shield for them and they start making mistakes. All in my opinion obviously.

We really need to buy some quality in CM in January but I don't think we will given the stadium costs. Should have got Andre Gomes on loan. Where can we find another Modric?

I rate Dier but I’m not sure how much more he will develop. He’s been in that position for 3-4 seasons now and he’s 25 in January.
 
Firstly i have to admit that i am gutted by the result and find it hard to accept that we were really that poor. But i have to say having read through this thread since the game i have never read so much, whinging, over the top comments and the ' chicken licken" posts that some of the posters have made.

I never get involved with the match tread as its usually full of gonads, over reactions and hysterical nonsense, usually from the same folks who obviously THINK they know better then our manager despite some of them probably never playing the game. Yet despite that they THINK they know how to win a game and who should have played or not, having a opinion is fine but reacting like a load of school children is pathetic.

I will probably have the Mods on my arse for saying all that but for fudges sake lets have a bit of perspective shown, instead of that we have the crying, wailing and knashing of teeth and a load of over reaction. We lost a game, we played brick, but that is no reason for some to waffle on as if they can do a better job then our manager.

Agreed.

The thing that gets me is the lack of trust in the Manager. It takes one loss in an admittedly big game to go looking for 'faults' and 'where he needs to improve' and all of sudden he isn't magic.

I think everything Poch does is with a longer term view in mind, and that is the way we compete with clubs that have more money than us right now. Foyth for Toby did a couple of things. It rested Toby when it seems like he needed it before a busy Christmas period (only other PL game he'd missed was Saudi Sportswashing Machine on the opening day and Sanchez and Jan got injuries). It also gives Foyth crucial minutes that will both improve him as a player, give him a tonne of confidence (saving us millions in the process when we don't need to buy another CB because he has stepped up) and it signals to any young player that if they come here and work hard, they will get opportunities.

Does it mean we may lose the Arsenal game? Quite possibly. Does playing Toby mean we might lose him for multiple crucial games and drop more points later on in the season, if he is at breaking point? Actually quite likely. It is a decision made not with the immediate future in mind, but the rest of the season. Poch puts a huge amount of stock in the conditioning of the players to help us compete, and that's why our form peaks are largely predictable.

The subs thing is also a biggie, and Emery is getting a lot of praise for decisively making two subs when down at half time, and winning the game. As well he should, that is his right as the victor. And maybe the subs could have come earlier. but I think a plan for us was put in place at half time that seemed to be working. Emery made two subs but we were on top when Auba scored. And I think another sub for us was about to be made just at the point that they get their 3rd. These things happen and goals rip up the best laid plans, but I don't think the theory was wildly wrong.

Just the game before we had beaten Inter with subs turning the game. But we also stayed patient and didn't panic in our approach. I think we were playing ok against Arsenal but the goals changed it, and I don't think the goals were particularly deserved. After that though, we looked a lot worse and ragged.

Were you not surprised (before the game) there was no Toby instead of Foyth!
I love Foyth but not sure when or whether you “rest” these young players in these types of scenarios.
Take him out and he get demoralised leave him in he gets demoralised due to errors?

Who is our "go to" player against the big teams? Kane is our best player and quite often scores against the big teams even if his performances are sometimes rather anonymous, he gets goals which is ultimately what top strikers are paid to to.

Other than Kane, who is really steps up in big games? I'm struggling to think of anyone.

United had Keane/Scholes/Ronaldo/Giggs/insert name here.

Chelsea had Drogba.

Liverpool had Gerrard.

Arsenal ironically didn't have anyone like the above. Henry was always their best player but he never scored in a final for club or country which is an incredible statistic!

When you use words like "bashing" it shuts down any debate Steff. Just because we all love Spurs doesn't mean we have to pretend every single player in the squad is world class and cannot be upgraded on. The fact is Poch went out and signed Wanyama who played ahead of Dier in his position for almost the entire 2016/17 season, that's not because fans bashed him, that's on Poch. He's a perfectly good squad player, I just don't think he's good enough on the ball for where we aspire to be and he has made some high profile mistakes with lazy passes against the top teams.
