Poch and his staff initiated.

The team spirit looks excellent, posted up by Kyle Walker on his instagram.

Awesome!

There's a long way to go, but I think most would be positive about Levy signing Poch now. He seems to know his stuff - how to setup and motivate a team. And as a player you'd want to play for him.

Baby steps....one step at a time...we can't get too excited....

JerusalemMan posted this in another thead, an interview where a player talks about Poch . It shows how much of a thinking player (situational awareness, decision making) Poch requires to work well in his system:

From L'Equipe. Apparently. Interview with Morgan.

You spoke about pressing earlier, does Pochettino like to isolate the player in possession, or does he prefer playing 1v1 all across the field?

First of all, we have to close the central zones. He keeps saying it’s the heart of play and there’s always more options from the central zones: switches of play etc…

He emphasises on blocking passing lanes. Anyway when I do press, I try to leave the worst passing option possible to the opponent.

Pochettino asks us not to give the opponent the choice. But it requires a massive amount of work from a collective point of view. It’s not surprising after six or seven months working on it that we’re now able to harass and fully imbalance some of the teams we face.

We couldn’t do that from the start as it’s a massive work put in at training.

He wants us to recover the ball as high as possible, so for that it’s usually up to a forward to trigger the pressing ; so then we’ve to follow.

Personally, I sometimes have to leave my zone to help on one side if a winger who was out of position because he was in a forward zone and couldn’t fall back in time.

I’m the closest to the ball to intervene so then even if I’m tired, I’m kicking my ass. So then, the winger has to fill my zone and then we switch positions.

This is the basic philosophy.

We have precise drills and patterns depending of the situation. On goal kicks, if they attack from the right side etc.

Pochettino is all about detail, really. I recall that he showed us from the start that a meter or half a meter could block two passing lanes in midfield.

We just had to move a step ahead or orientating our body a given way to face the opponent in order to put him into trouble

How is all that implemented on daily basis at training?

You’re ought to know we play a 11v11 game every Wednesday. It’s often against the reserves, or the academy ; youths basically but intensity is maximal.

The staff implements several patterns of play depending of the situations. And as we changed the system – because Pochettino likes to play with a 10 and a lone striker – because Osvaldo and Lambert are both out and out forwards, it requires adaptation

We work on patterns to get the ball out from the back on goal kicks: the last two games, both CM had to get to both angles of the penalty box while the two CB had to spread to both sides of the box.

Full backs have to get close to the byline and the midway line. The purpose is to get the ball out from the back on ground and not hoofing the ball on Lambert.

If the pass toward Wanyama isn’t possible, we have the two center backs. If opponents close us down, so then both full backs are unmarked in a free zone. The aim is to find them as soon as possible in order to write off the most opposing players as we can.

If ever we don’t have a short option, that means that the opponent has closed us down as a team ans so then we’ve to play long on Lambert because it will be 1v1 in the air. But we often change that pattern because opponents adapts after a couple of games.

While attacking, there’s also the will to pass the ball on the floor and stretch opposing defences. Hence how crucial is your role as you’re a specialist to switch the play?

We must know how to oxygenate play, dictating the rhythm, surprise the opponent. Pochettino asks me to switch the play often because he likes that.

He wants us to develop a genuine playing identity. Even falling back as a team is necessary, he gives us license to attack. He wants his full backs to get into attacking positions, put under pressure opponent’s wingers. We always have to scan around.

And oh, how 4231 doesn't do justice to the depth and layers possible in his footballing methods. A far cry from the I-pick-the-team-they-do-their-thing approach we've seen before.

In that interview, he brings up something that I was thinking about. Southampton took a while to adapt to Poch's style of play. He's had the full pre-season with us, but it may be a transitional start to the season. As long as promising signs are there, then I'm happy for it to take time for the team to develop

Considering that he took over a team battling relegation mid season, and that this was his first job in the PL, and that his English skills were limited I think he got them to adapt very quickly. Makes me hopeful for this season.

I agree with your sentiment, if it takes some time I will be happy to give him time as long as there are some positive signs.

Southampton were in 15th place when Poch took over in Jan, they ended up finishing in 14th. First season back in the Prem, good job done by both Atkins and Poch.
The style of play under Poch wasn't a huge change, Atkins had them playing some lovely football while achieving back to back promotions.

Bad news guys, Poch won't even make it to Christmas. Good news is we still finish 4th :)

starting to get the buzz now for next season!!!! gonna be interesting to see how we are first 10 games and then how we push on from there!!!!!

I generally believe if Poch gets us playing some decent stuff again then he will get the time and patience that will inevitably be required.

Apparently he was very dismissive of our club, stating that he's too big for us.

That's the article. As it's a GiveMeSport article it might not be grounded as much in reality as it appears but, knowing previous reports about his attitude, may give done credence to the report.

I don't think he was meaning to insinuate that he's to big for us but just that United are bigger than us which is more than fair enough.

Have nothing against LVG but do wish we could go one day in football without them talking about him. I thought the hype around Moyes was bad enough!

That's lvg for you . He will outgrow Man U too. But let's see if he can win anything in the Epl where it's not the typical two horse race.

Back to poch... I don't it's going to be easy for him either. There's a lot of work to be done, we still have a very unbalanced squad, poch and his cronies have no experience with the demands of Europa ... I expect things to get worse before it gets better, and to end the season on a high.

Yes quite. Its not been ideal preparation pre season with key players injured plus World Cup stars out. In essence, Poch has had the second team to work with in preseason up till now. Which means he's got two weeks with the full team - to get across his ideas, to watch them play, to decide who is right to start and where, and no time to really refine the team.

I still have the utmost confidence we'll see a better side evolving. But we need a little patience. With our past two managers, results ruled over performances and progression. This time we have a manager with more vision, who knows what he wants.

Still Pochettinho's Spurs will start off with a strong defence. Which will keep us in the mix in all games. But it may take time and we may leak goals as we get used to playing his way. And we might see us struggle to score in the early days.

How many games did Southampton fail to score in, under the Argie Messiah?

well at least with poch ... all signs point to a more sensible approach to evolving the team. should be fun to watch over time, and it should provide plenty of fodder! poch's immediate challenge is to unlock the value in soldado and lamela. I don't think we're going to be in a lot of bore-draws.

His short interview on the bbc today.

I really really enjoyed it.

His calmness and approach makes me all warm and fuzzy. I am so comfortable with this guy as coach. He has a plan and the players seem happy. Training looks organised.

Also there are no expectations from the media and most other teams fans this season, means we can go out and have fun as a team and who knows what we might achieve.
