Mathys Tel

I’m not really seeing a lot from him…runs around, but loses possession too often, his crossing is average at best, and he ought to have hit the target at the very least with that chance early on yesterday. He’s made a number of bad decisions in the box in recent games.

Young and learning, of course, but a sad reflection that we’re increasingly relying on him as a starter.
perhaps but i saw much less from odobert and muani
yeah selection by elimination

Odobert doesn't play well on the right at all he only plays reasonably well on the left (and sometimes the centre), he and Tel are fighting for the same position of LWF. Odobert is a little more versatile so he is getting minutes in the right but he's pretty awful there.

20 years of age and trying to perform in a team that lacks stucture. He has talent but by the looks of it som fans have allready written him off.

Poor lad should be coming on with 20 minutes to go in games we’re already two goals up in. We shouldn’t be having to rely on him as a starter in a desperately struggling team at this point in his development.

Whoever sits round a table and goes "ok so we are losing Son, we have Odobert as an understudy moving forward, who do we get to replace Son.........why not activate Tels loan to a perm"............take them out to the pasture

100%

Nothing personal against Tel - either he or Odobert as backups to develop over a few seasons behind an established starter would have been fine, but having two players as your options for a starting XI position that are both years away from being top quality is poor squad building.

And TBH out the two I would have taken Tel before Odobert, but it just didn't happen in that order. I wouldn't mind if Tel was outstanding on loan but he wasn't

Its GHod awful squad building.

If ever...

Says a lot that a player that hasn't come close to scoring or assisting has been our best attacker

*possibly has assisted but can't be arsed checking

FWIW…

Tel so far this season: 3 goals + 0 assists and Odobert has 2 goals + 2 assists

Son at the same stage last season: 8 goals + 7 assists

Obviously helps that we had Kulusevski + Maddison + Solanke + Johnson available at the start of least season plus Udogie at LB.

Other difference is Odobert has had 803 league mins versus Tel who has had 527. How many mins had Son played at this stage of the season? Most of them right.

My current thought process is to leave Tel on the left for a run of league games. Let's see what happens.

Ill predict, not much.

Best attacker and good attacker are not the same thing sadly. 😭

Tel like with the rest of the youth prospects are a lot of hope attached to not a lot of actual promise.

He deserves to start because right now we don't not have anyone better.

FFS, are we now really comparing a 20 year old kid to a Tottenham legend? Shock horror, the legend has better stats.

The bottom line is right now we don't not have a better player to play ahead of Tel.

As Billy says, I’m merely highlighting how poor a job the transfer committee has been doing that instead of pushing the boat out and using the glory of being CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE to attract someone who might be able to fill that void (as Semenyo could’ve done if we’d got him last summer) we’ve instead once again speculated on a couple of youngsters; who in all likelihood will end up at mid-table clubs just like Gil, Solomon, Bergwijn, N’koudou, N’jie, Danjuma, Werner…

Whilst the tactics deployed by Frank make AVB look like 1970s Brazil, the fact that we’ve got so many mediocre attackers is undoubtedly a major factor in our lack of goal output and even whilst playing Ange-ball last season only saw Tel contribute 2 PL goals in 11 starts; with both of those scored against teams with even leakier defences than our backup CBs!

So Tel has 3 goals in 527 minutes in the league, a goal every 175 minutes.

Can't be bothered doing stats for this time last year, but across last season Son had 7 goals in 2118 league minutes. A goal every 302 minutes.

Tel has zero assists this season. Son had 9 in the league last season so if we combine goals and assists Son had a goal involvement every 132 minutes.

Sample size is small enough for Tel to be pretty meaningless. Sample size is big enough for Son to say that he had probably fades significantly by last season and was sold to MLS for a reason.

Agreed that Tel deserves more game time. Couldn't understand him getting subbed against West Ham unless there was an injury/fitness concern.

Exactly that. Sonny's goals were front end loaded in the season so the above stats also looked a little distorted. I think SteveAWOLwill be having a little chuckle to himself. He just threw some great stats up like he often does. It created the right conversation.

The net, net is you can only look forward and as we all seem to be saying Tel probably needs more game time. The backing from the manager and a run in the team to see if he can really get going. Unless Lange unearths the January big fish for the left forward role, I would be investing in Tel for a while.
