That's an interesting thought...not sure how that would work as Ange likes his other forwards wide but as someone playing close to Solanke is an interesting propositionWhen he's playing with Solanke, I expect to see more space for him to flourish and show what he's got.
He may well start out wide but I guess his instinct will be to drive centrally from the flank. That's an interesting thought...not sure how that would work as Ange likes his other forwards wide but as someone playing close to Solanke is an interesting proposition
I think he shows great promise. Very good movement (we missed several great runs he made), plays with his head up and chest out (naturally confident) and gets into good positions. I think once he and Maddison (plus the whole team in fairness) get to know each other better, we will see a really good player. It was his home debut today BTW, and yes, 19 and not familiar with this league yet.
For this to work we need to find a makelele or kante to sit and be worth two players with the work rate and ground covered. That was painfully noticeable.
I think a setup of Deki with Maddison in center (from beginning) and Wilson/Son & Johnson out side will get him more opportunities. He gets into good positions over and over. 19, but promise is pretty obvious

I'd love to think that is Archie gray but he's possibly not physical enough for that role. Onana at Villa would have been my choice there I think.
Oh and not another Didier Zokora. Would need to be a worldie in there.

I love the idea of deki and madders (sounds like a cop show from the 70s!) in tandem, but the issue I have is the remaining CM. Bergvall or Gray in time may do it if they are lead that way now, but it's too much for Biss and apparently same for Sarr, albeit I don't think he's been fit for a while to be honest. We are (in my opinion) closest to City in overcommit, and we see how they struggle without a "Rodri" to hold it together
Base principle of Ange (and it has changed with the injuries, maybe with learnings) is 4-3-3 out of possession become 2-3-5 in attack. The center is by design congested (when we fudge up is if the lines are too far apart and it creates gaps inbetween), so the route of counter is wide (so when people bitch about the ball behind Porro, it's part of the system). The big protection is having a fast CB running a shorter path to cut off (hence VDV being so important).
The question is how do you tweak that to be more protective? do you simply rely on a WC DM? do you have one of your sitters drop back, so instead of just the CB's, you have a 3rd, or similarly, do you have FBs do one up, one back?
Back to original thread, Deki & Maddison has worked against certain opposition and could create a lot for a player like Tel making intelligent runs.
I don’t think it’s one simple solution. But a refining of many things. For example, not conceding possession ourselves so easily. Often were our own worst enemies committing men forward in possession, and we lose the ball to an aggressive press. If we just fixed this we’d probably half our goals conceded (slight exaggeration). Being able to control the game is so crucial and we’ve rarely done that. City are maybe more patient holding the ball longer than we are - we look to break quickly like pool. We take more risks with possession and currently lose the ball too often. A second area to improve is how we break. Liverpool are precise when counterattacking. We’re not yet. We’ll commit forward only to lose the ball and expose ourselves again. We are (in my opinion) closest to City in overcommit, and we see how they struggle without a "Rodri" to hold it together
