Long-term and short-term thinking

Seeing your managers comments about cup competitions plastered all over the media again and again is not the way t do it. IF he is telling the players different in training then why does he need/want to keep saying these comments to the press.

I have heard some say he does it to take pressure of the players, well if he is telling ( as you seem to be suggesting?) players his real feelings in training he would have no need to say anything to keep the pressure of his players.

And if it is a deliberate tactic it doesn't look like it is working either. That limp 2nd half performance versus utd being the case in point. Maybe a bit of pressure on the players might be exactly what they need.

Well i would expect that the BEST players thrive on pressure ( and i have always been lead to believe that is true),as i said earlier giving players a excuse for failure ( ie its not that important this FA CUP) is not the way to get results ( imo).

Because it's a message to the press more than it is the players - it's telling the press that it's our performance in the league and the CL that they should be rating this team on not whether or not we pick a league or FA Cup up along the way.

I don't see why this would effect the players mindset for cup games if on the training field and behind the scenes the focus is on doing as well as possible in the cups and aiming to win them, which i believe it is.

Well two things to that, 1, it is not working and it makes no difference to what they write and 2, that it seems to me ( imo) you are making it up as you go along with this discussion.

Needless to say we will probably never agree on this subject.

I think he is sending out a message, you (the players) may be happy and settle for an F A cup, but I as the manager and we as a club won't.
This squad is good enough to win the domestic cups, poch isn't telling them they aren't or to throw games.
The opportunity and platform is there for them, they're not taking it.
If poch is the man, coach and manager I think he is he has learnt a lot about certain parts of his squad this season and I expect some changes in the window.
It's like the end of season Saudi Sportswashing Machine debacle times 10.

Typical, and about par for the course for you.

You've accused me of making up as i go along when my point has remained the same throughout the discussion - you just don't seem to grasp what im saying.

I apoligise for the remark though as that was out of line.

In any business whatever you say as the public face is a representation of what is happening behind the scenes

If your brave enough to create one public story and another behind the scenes then bravo... but in football terms you would do that by playing your best available teams in these games!!! Poch has wnevr ever played his full 11 in a cup game IIRC

I think the idea that Poch 'doesn't care about the cups' is utterly absurd and the reaction of the players and the staff after Saturday should make it blindingly clear that everyone cares. Poch clearly cares, and the idea that by talking down the FA Cup publicly, he has affected the motivation of the players is just nonsense to me. Look at their reaction - players and staff. They all wanted it desperately. What Poch was trying to say publicly clearly had no relation to how much he actually wanted to win that cup privately, and it's a very lazy narrative that the media are looking to construct.

With that said, there is something to be said for saying something publicly that doesn't invite such skepticism. There's something about saying something that is within the realms of realism and therefore doesn't serve as a negative. I can see what Poch was saying, and I agree with it. But when it is so clearly not congruent with the reality of the situation - and the reaction from everyone associated with the club on Saturday showed that it wasn't - then I think a change in tack might be in order. Whether he was trying to take the pressure off in a one-off game, or whether he was trying to make the point that a player under his charge should be motivated all season long, to be consistent and not just in the one off games, either way I think we'll be seeing a different message next season. He doesn't need to make those points anymore, and in any sense they aren't realistic. We clearly do want to win a trophy and there's no point suggesting otherwise. The players have arrived at a point where they feel they deserve it, they act like it, and to say anything else just invites derision and unnecessary scrutiny on the team when really we should be viewed as one top team playing against another with a 50/50 chance of winning.

Claiming we don't need a trophy now has elements of 'they doth protest too much' about it and makes it easy for media and fans to view us not as that top team that has done well to get to that point, but as Spurs, 8 Semi Finals lost in a row, no trophy for a decade, etc etc. Coming a little bit more towards public opinion would help reduce that pressure and invite less derision. That doesn't mean we have to say it is existential for us to win it, and that a loss renders all work pointless, but there's probably no harm in him saying we want it because we want something to show for how good and consistent we have been, and if we don't get it we will be disappointing, because we expect to win things. I think Saturday was a watershed, we've come so far and I think he has done a great job shifting our mentality so that we are consistent in the League over a season as much as we can reasonably expect. Now it's about adjusting again, and taking that next step. It's a very interesting psychological and leadership problem and one I expect him to figure out.

I wonder if something else has happened within the club, because our performances since the Chelsea win have taken a bit of a dive to be honest. We were lucky in that Stoke game. We weren't anywhere near as ruthless as we should have been and we gave them way more opportunities that we should have.

I'd be interested to know if the stuff about Levy's pay has had some sort of negative effect. Or if the players thought the job was done after the Chelsea win for the season. Either way, something doesn't feel quite right.

Since the Chelsea game it fealt and looked like there has been a negative “event” at the club
