Leaves on the Line..

Id be lucky to earn 1/3 of what I do working locally
There's your options then, pretty much Hobson's choice I guess.

I hated commuting, was able to take a sideways move out of working in London, lost London Weighting but gained about 20 hours a week in saved travelling time and got my quality of life back.

London weighting is like 5k - which sounds like a lot but once you factor in those costs and as you say time - really worth it?

Obviously Marky's diff because it aint just london weighting but actual salary that is inferior

I agree about the leaves bit... have you guys ever walked on wet leaves on the ground? slippery fudgers - like banana skin

Which was a euphemism for dog brick as early Hollywood films weren't allowed to show people slipping over in brick.

I agree, just using my case as an example. Not that Network Rail pay anything approaching £5k LW. Half that or less probably these days, it was only £1.5k when I was getting it 10 years ago.

Showing your age there mate haha

Trains! Don't talk to me about fudging trains. For WHU on Sun there are no direct trains to London on the 5 closest lines to me. All of them have replacement bus services for part of the journey. Bunch of absolute ****s. Who decides to do engineering work on every line on the same day! ****s.

Best mate is a sunderland fan and it took him 5 hours on the train from victoria on sunday. Was meant to be a stopping service but it decided to run fast through stations, he said the was no one telling them it had changed, he actually lives right by one of the smaller stops, was not happy. I found it pretty funny as it happened to someone else.

On trains in europe, i was in Berlin in the summer and although i found that city dirty and disgusting there train service is second to none and does indeed run through the night. I felt totally safe on it.

Also interesting about Berlin but talking to a German lady i know and they can pay a one off fee of £300 a year and use the U-bahn as much as they like. That is like our tube service. Quite impressive really.

Marky, people dismiss leaves on the line as a daft excuse but trust me on this one, the person who finds a cure would become immensely wealthy. I'm not saying that maintainers and TOCs don't trot out that excuse glibly to cover other failings but the three main problems it causes are poor rail head adhesion, loss of train detection in track circuited areas & wheel flats which then go on to wreck the rails.

SS1882, don't believe the hype about other countries running a 24 hour railway, maintenance has to be carried out as some time so if the trains are running on all lines 24/7 then important maintenance isn't taking place.

All the gripes are true, just thought I'd give a bit of background info.

Start cutting back trees near railway lines of perhaps in september when the leaves start to fall from the trees they take early action and go round and cut them down, maybe get the unemployed to do it for their dole money.

You found Berlin dirty? Crikey can picture you visiting London with the Michael Jackson mask round the mask jobby.

I love Germany some very beautiful parts but i did not like Berlin at all some seriously ugly building as well, great history but ugly as fudge city. Also where i was staying kruz 36 was just turkey really.

Novel approach to tackling dole queues, let me get this straight, you want untrained youngsters to climb trees wielding high powered chain saws in the vicinity of 25KV overhead power lines while their mate stays on the deck feeding cuttings into an industrial chipper? The dole queues would go down quickly.

If George Osborne had come up with that he'd award himself a knighthood. :)

As of 2nd Feb 2011 there were no changes to review the £5,000 limit. I've not heard anything on it since.

Thats what I never understood and still dont Mr Auditor over here - what justification is there to maintain a limit of £5k when you have season tickets and travel fares increasing? You need to increase the £5k proportionately to the increase in fares - or is that common sense that aint so common anymore...

grrrrrrrrr

So glad I don't have to work in London anymore. Currently have to get a bus 10 minutes from my flat to work. Done 11 years from Cheshunt station into seven sisters GHod the scum hanging around that station!!!

Always been a brick excuse the leaves one. Feel for ya guys.

Well its not actually a season ticket loan, it's legislation where employers can loan £5k for certain things which a lot of them take advantage of to use as a season ticket loan scheme.

But yeah I know what you mean and it should go up.

Just because you don't understand it doesn't make it a brick excuse.

Had a jumper in front of a train lastnight, people taking over 5 hours to get home, looking forward to the £5 compensation voucher we will get for that

Cut down all the trees along rail routes.

Show me the money.
