Where my theory falls down a little bit is that Levy has appointed a man who you only appoint to win trophies. There is no point in Jose if you want to win the transfer cup because that's not what he's about and he won't be here in three years anyway.

Last summer's spending would suggest we'd have been on course to financially satisfy Jose's transfer wishes to an acceptable level (not saying completely because maybe Jose demands a lot?)

It looks like Covid has shunted us back into the net spend lane.

I think that is the case here, covid has changed the timing and put us back because of it. If all goes well i think we will be in a better place come next summer to open our spending plans.

This is a great post and it's very hard to argue with it but I'll try offer a counterpoint anyway.

To me, up to now, Levy seems to want to challenge for trophies in a sustainable way. If we grow revenue, we can spend more on players and win trophies. He's put a lot of the infrastructure in there to grow revenue but we aren't there yet. So he wants to continue to win the transfer cup and revenue cup with a view to challenging for trophies. His critics would say that he's trying to grow profit and that's all Levy and Enic care about.

So by virtue of appointing Mourinho, I think your last paragraph is spot on. In fact, I think Levy has already picked winning trophies as what he wants and he needs to back that up because Jose is a great manager but not a miracle worker.

We as fans view everything through a very narrow window, we have little reliable info.
I didn't want poch sacked and I still think it was the last in a series of mistakes. Mistakes made by the club, Levy, Poch and the players. Slightly different choices made before hand and this could have been avoided.
I don't blame or even judge Levy, he made a call, a call I neither like or agree with, but he has all the info to make that call, I don't.
I cannot believe that Levy would do anything that isn't in the clubs best interests, and he's in a much better position to see that than I am.
The one slight criticism I have of Levy is that it appears he is himself unsure of how to move on and take the next step.
The next 18 months will be interesting.

I'm not a fan but it could be that on the 5 times I've seen him he has happened to have a mare...He's also going to be overpriced, big wages and the chairman of the club is openly prone to airing dirty laundry in public. No thanks Japhet will be just fine for me rather than wrecking the budget for this oaf.
