January Transfer Thread - it couldn't open and close any quicker

Exactly. And Conte wasn’t even here when Bale went back so it’s a mute point.

I’m with you anyway - it’s not about what those 3 would have done under Nuno or Conte. It’s about letting that output go and not bothering to replace it. It’s negligence of the squad as I posted in the summer transfer window.

I don’t know another club that makes transfers look so difficult and then when we do get them over there line, they take about 2 years to get going if at all!

Otherwise we will end up with more good players looking poor because they are being asked to do two types of adaptation at once (i.e. Royale).

Signing players from Inter Milan would be very sensible (i.e. Brozovic, De Vrij, even Eriksen) as they are already versed in the system so should be able to slot in easily.

Absolutely, if available and good enough.

But it's also the job of Paratici and the scouting team along with Conte to identify players that will fit in our current system even if they're not currently playing in that system.

Ideally players that would be an even better fit in our system so that they're not currently performing at their highest level so the transfer fee can be lower.

See quite a lot of frustration going around.

Most of the moves I've seen so far have been for players were the selling club were happy to sell or even actively looking to get rid of a player. Not that many players fitting into those categories that we'd be happy signing I think.

Was always going to be difficult, let's see what Paratici, Levy etc can make happen first.

I think the frustration is building, you're right. But we're in a better position now we that have a DoF rather than without one, and we all know Jan is tough

Frustration just stems from the number of holes in our squad, the fact we're so far worse than we were only a small number of years ago, a couple other potentially big teams (esp Saudi Sportswashing Machine splashing the cash) etc...and if you roll each of those forward another year or so without action being taken, then the idea that we could qualify for CL football and win trophies will be laughable.

Big couple windows ahead

Agreed. I guess it's a question of perspective and time. First half of a difficult January window isn't really the decisive bit, what happens over this and the summer window probably is.

Countinho, trippier and wood would all have enhanced our squad.

there are quite a few players with contracts expiring in the summer who would improve our squad.
There are plenty of deals to be done, our interview is not a good look

£50m odd on players we'd be likely be looking to move on in about six months time though.

I think the frustration is more because we haven't even had a concrete link to a single player yet. But then Sarr and Royal particularly just seemed to sign out of nowhere last summer, so it's not necessarily anything to worry about. It's just that maybe a non-English DoF has curtailed the leaks.
 
I agree that alongside the (hopefully) superior transfer nous that he brings, he may also have a superior handle on the managing of leaks.

Improved our squad, sure, I guess.

Enough to justify the financial outlay, good enough fits for the Conte system, worth not signing other players in January or the summer because we signed them? Not for me.

Quite possibly, my point was that there are deals out there to be had that could improve our squad, if you care to look, but Traore aside we don’t seem to be making much of an effort.

given the gaps and deficiencies in our squad, some of them very long-standing, you’d think more effort would be made now that we have a truly elite manager.

Is Trippier better than Doherty? Yes
Is Wood better than no-one? Yes
Is Coutinho better than GLC? probably

But need to also factor in their fees and ages. £25m for Wood is nonsense - we should be able to put that one someone younger

Honestly
Wood is a good player and effective with it. He occupies the CBS he plays against which is more than anyone in our team does other than Kane
Trippies crossing would be a huge huge benefit to a conte team
 
We really need to sign players in the next five to six days. We are in our optimum point for transfers. If we leave it any longer than that then clubs will find ways to postpone deals, and reject bids so that they keep their players barring us offering the kinda money that under Levy we just won’t do. I’m honestly amazed that we haven’t added anyone yet at half way through. We promised Conte backing and have completed zero deals. Not good.

Hopefully we would all get behind any Conte signing. It’s the best chance that we have, even if the signing isn’t necessarily the one that we want. I think Wood is underrated but at 30+ the deal isn’t one that we were ever likely to complete. He’s a striker who with service can score 15+ a season at a good club.
 
Yeah, I'd have had him in 4-5 years ago just to be the blunt object needed to play the likes of West Ham. I was so tinkled when he scored against us, in a 1-1 home draw, a few years back. But kept an eye on him after that.
