January transfer rumour thread

People always say that we're running out of talent. It was only a couple of years ago that everyone was banging on that we wouldn't have an England football team once the "golden age" retire. fudge that, we might actually have a chance of winning something with the next batch, if someone keeps their egos in check!

I think maybe it is out of sorts at the moment. You have the two Spanish clubs really pooling talent. I mean, look at Kaka. A Ballon d'Or winner who isn't a given on the team sheet.

But the Germans (/Turkish :) ) are putting out some brilliant footballers in every position, Spain obviously as well and there is as much South American talent as there ever was.

You don't think there are enough strikers to go around? I can name a hat full, just from South America that we would have in the team tomorrow:

Messi
Aguero
Tevez
Alex Sanchez
De Maria
Higauin
Cavani
Suarez
Falcao
Neymar
Pato
Robinho

And that's not even mentioning players like Damiao, Hulk or Nilmar, who may make the grade as well. It's easy to get starry eyed for the past, as you don't know what surprises are up ahead. But there is as much talent as there ever was. Maybe it's a case of it being pooled by the big clubs.

Look at Real Madrid and the centre of their midfield: Kaka, Ozil, Granero all looking for the attacking/anchor role; Diarra, Alonso and Khedira all looking for the holding/defensive role. So that's 6 players at the top of their game on rotation and in amongst that they STILL have a player like Altintop sat behind all of them in extra reserve and players like Gago out on loan as he can't get a game.

If anything, it's the distribution of players now, due to distribution of wealth and associated salaries.

IMO of course :D

But the point is, how many of those players could we actually get, and how much would those players cost.

Alot of them are not even all that good, but they would still go for 60M plus, because people like Carroll are supposedly worth 35M.

Part of the problem is that the richest clubs aren't happy with just a top first XI and decent backup, they want 16-18 top players and a lot of players would rather sit on the bench for them while making tons of money. I personally feel a lot of the second tier of players aren't as good as they were 5-10 years ago. In the past most clubs in the PL would have a couple of biggish names, but that's reserved for the top half now.

Outside Barca, Real, City and Chelsea, how many world class or close to world class players are there? A lot of potential ones out there, but very few have taken that final step.

@indianspur and jordinho :- i dont think that there is a lack of top quality players at all. infact i think the overall level of footballers in general has increased on a global scale. its probably because of the lack obvious segregation between these footballers that are making people believe that there is a lack

bad countries are getting better and the good ones are stagnant.

another thing is the fall of the big leagues and other small leagues losing their players due to the lobsided monopoly like divide of TV money around the world. exposure is no longer as much in other leagues like in the past

using Ba as an example. prior to his run in Saudi Sportswashing Machine / west ham the general world didnt really appreciate him nearly as much as when he got exposed in this league via TV . players like him for instance are all over the dark continent but so many factors prohibits them from making the leap. south america have lots of talented players , holland, portugal, spain, england are harvesting some nice young talents too

maybe i'm not appreciating the level of talent you guys are referring to. an example would be great

Sky Sports sources understand that Fulham have made a bid for Wigan Athletic striker Hugo Rodallega. And Roberto Martinez confirms he could leave, but he ruled out possible dale of either Victor Moses or James McCarthy.

are there supposed to be LOADS of world class players out there though? its always been a select few players that make the grade of world class.

and also you cant be crowned world class without jumping a few hurdles. to jump those hurdles you have to be on a big big stage.

so even though you have the talent you cant prove what you're made off

have you got any interest in boxing by any chance? i want to use an analogy but it might be lost on you LOL

Hard to explain really, but I don't feel the players presented as stars by the media are THAT good. Money is obviously a big issue, as a lot of quality is wasted on the bench. Also, the way football has changed in recent years to a more defensive game, as many clubs consider avoiding relegation the only thing worth while. I do miss the good old days when every team had a potential star or two, capable of that moment of magic, before the rich clubs started stock piling.

I'm trying to put my thoughts into writing, but the words aren't coming to me. Will try again a bit later.

I do think the 25man squad is a step in the right direction. It might take a few years though before some of the better players filter down to the smaller clubs as there will be essentially overflow from the top clubs.

I'm sure I remember not that long ago where City could have nearly fielded a team of strikers they had so many on their books.

Excellent point too

Surely we want someone who will be able to come in and fit the way we play now, a big name might be great but not is they disrupt the team or take 6 weeks to gel

Two of our best signings in the summer? Adebayor and Parker, how many friendlies did they get to play? how long did they have before they 'geled' with the rest of our team?

It appears this geling idea only applies to non PL-players... get tevez? :ross:

Fully agreed. Big/rich clubs stockpiling quality players just increases the gap between top and mid-table. I fear the problem will only increase, with the best players simply moving between the top teams in the different leagues, all very happy to sit on the bench and collect their inflated wages if they aren't first choice.

The 25 man squad is a step in the right direction. I'd like to see restrictions in loaned out players as well: 25 in squad + 2 on loan maximum, for instance. That, plus wage caps and proper Financial doping rules, would help level the playing field, IMO. At least it would make money less of an issue than it is today in regards to the pulling power and success of a club.
