Jan Vertonghen

How do the refs get this so wrong? I have to keep telling myself that we won, but this is bothering me so much haha.

At the point the ball is played forward by Paulinho, Verts has almost crossed the halfway line, a second later and he would have which would have made him offside as there was only one opposition player in their half. It was the wrong decision by Lino but may be not as ridiculous in real time?

No, when the ball was played, he was in our half, right in Foy's line of sight, and even after crossing the half, the opposition player was well in front ...

I can't even make up a ****ing excuse for either the linesman or Foy

Haha! This for me too! I'm normally okay if we've won but I hate feckin' injustice from the officials! Was celebrating the goal with the littlun and was totally dumbfounded when it was disallowed!

Only one opposition player though which would have made him offside if the ball had been played when he was in that half. But I get he was onside. I still think he was getting close to that line when paulinho played the ball so I could see how an error could be made.

I can't believe you're being serious, I was watching it in real time and it wasn't even close. When they went to show the replays I assumed they was going to show some sort of off the ball foul as offside hadn't even crossed my mind.

It was just embarrassing officiating and there is no excuse...

Of all the poor decisions we’ve seen in the Premier League this season, ruling out Jan Vertonghen’s late goal against Sunderland has been the worst.

It’s a very, very poor call from Chris Foy, who was only yards from the ball, could clearly see the pass and that Vertonghen was inside Tottenham's half as he raced away. For me, he’s as culpable as Adam Nunn, the assistant who raised his flag.

As has been the case on numerous occasions this season, the communication between the referee and his assistant was poor. After the ball went in, Foy should have consulted Nunn over the decision and overruled his assistant’s call, given that he was in an excellent position to see the incident and did not need to rely on anyone else to make the correct judgement.

Assistant referees get paid £800 per game in the Premier League and they should not be making mistakes as big as this. Nunn is only young and new to the top flight but I believe he’s being put forward by David Elleray, chairman of the FA referees’ committee, for the Uefa Centre of Refereeing Excellence (CORE) course for assistant referees. If he’s making decisions like this, you have to ask whether he’s the right choice.

With FA Cup games next weekend, it’ll be interesting to see whether Nunn is taken out of the equation. As for Foy, who knows. There’s been certain times when officials have been left out for poor decisions, Lee Mason has been stood down since Boxing Day, while Mark Clattenburg has been dropped this season for his supposed errors.

lol yep I'm the same - I'm well annoyed we didn't get a 3-1 win. We need that goal for the GD.

There are zero excuses for the officials for this completer.utter.*** up, definitely the worst call we've received since Pedro Mendes, although FOY's multiple disgraces against Stoke a few years back runs them close.

Yeah I mentioned that in the match thread... Didn't we have a Groundhog Day moment when we went back their the following year and he reffed again? Not as bad as that first time but still felt like he was wearing a stoke shirt!

I know it has been mentioned in another thread, as the goal was disallowed it means Sunderland stay ahead of Burnley. Now had this been the last day of the season and that decision was the difference between Burnley staying up and Sunderland going down I wonder what would happen? #
I know it is all hypothetical, but that goal could have cost (it may still do, you never know) Burnley £60m. Wonder if a team in that situation could have the decision overturned?

I don't think so. You'd be opening a can of worms by doing that. Ultimately officials get decisions wrong all the time. Another team could argue they were denied a stonewall penalty. Or a team scored a valid goal but was incorrectly given offside. These things happen unfortunately and we have to make sure the ref retains that power. The official should be warned or punished for it as it's such a balls up whilst doing their job.
 
Anyway, great to see this guy return to some form after the misery of last season. I forgot just how much I loved the Super Jan celebration

Had Jan been in there half he would have been offside as the keeper came up for the corner so only one player between Jan and the goal. However.... Jan was no F'in where near their half!!

Even if Vertonghen had been standing alone on the Sunderland penalty spot,he would have still have been onside as the ball played to him came from our half of the pitch..why is this so hard to understand.

You do know that's NOT how offside works, right? Half the offsides in any given match are the result of balls played from within the team's own half. Offside is pretty much all about where the receiving player is when the ball is played./

Yep my mistake...of course he was in our half when the pass was made and ran on and scored.Forget my previous post please lol.
