James Maddison

His off the ball diligence was just as vital. Putting himself in the thick of it, taking fouls, that sort of thing. Let's see. Tremendous from him once he scored today, let's see him boss Roma and Fulham...

Interesting post match interview. Basically saying he takes it on himself to position himself during the game. Then threw in “of course we have tactical training in the week where we listen to the manager”

Maybe I am misreading what you're getting at, it looks like you're making out that the comment was a dig at the manager? Maddison has has self belief and trusts his instinct and I'm sure Ange appreciates that. I saw the interview and it's not like he said "I just do whatever the fudge I like because I know best".

Every player will have instructions on where they're meant to, what role they are filling but also have to react to what happens on the pitch as it unfolds.

Great to have him come back in and perform like he did, I doubt many would have had him in the line up with Kulu going back wide, although you could put the Swede in goal and he'd still put in a blinding performance against City....It'll be interesting to see if Maddison starts on Thursday, ideally Bergvall and him can start showing that they can function on the pitch together.

Agreed, I didn’t see it as a dig, just good to see confirmation that players can take the initiative if they see fit. Been reading so much in recent weeks that it’s totally down to Ange and his tactics almost as if they’re robots. Refreshing to hear they can break rank as and when

... Him dropping deep to help our buildup play when they pressed was just as vital.

All round a really strong game from him. Complete performance.

Never really was a doubt that he is capable of that and that he would bounce back at some point. Now for the consistency.

Did he change his haircut?

I have criticised him before on here but he was really good yesterday, and therein is the problem he is and always has been a inconsistant player. There is no doubting his ability but he seems to blow hot and cold. His talent is up there with the best but there are as many games when he seems to just go through the motions. IF Ange can get him playing to his best on a regular basis then there is no doubt he is a very good player. imo

Yeah, this game answers none of the questions about his consistency. Though still good to see him put in such a good performance at a time when he's been far from his best.

I maintain hope that he will find more consistency, but even a string of 5-10 strong performances now wouldn't really answer those questions. Time will tell, but him becoming good again now would be useful regardless.

I think it's two things

- Said it before, his fitness is a big part of his consistency issues (and he does take a lot of knocks)
- For us, I think he needs to understand there is some balance between him being that free player and fitting in system, earlier in season it looked hard to see him and Deki fitting in same side
- See heat map below, quite disciplined, definitely pulling the strings deeper (and opposite side to Deki) but also protecting that left side and providing a passing route out of City's press.

Yeah, agree

I also hope the fans don't go into panic mode every time we see rotation. We're going to see deeper and more talented squads from this point and only 11 can start, with 16 involved on the pitch on match days. That means that we should be careful with the panic button when players like Madds go through a phase of sitting on the bench. We've watched Pep have some great players held back for pretty long periods and then come back in and be truly relevant to winning trophies over the years. I remember when Henderson came back from the 2018 world cup and Klopp barely used him in the early part of the season. That was the end of captain fantastic Hendo in some fans minds. He was holding the CL aloft at the end of that season, and the PL title in the following one, and then played on way beyond.

Best I've ever seen him! Not only for the goals, but his work rate, tenacity and will to win the ball. He was like a dog chasing the ball! Shows that he's got it in him, and it's up to him to be that player consistently. That's the level required against every team! Hopefully this was a wake up call for him, and the rest. It's only up to them to be that kin of player, and not be the diva or maverick that only does the pretty bit, not the hard bit.

I agree on fitness. Part of why we need options both to protect/rotate him and to have other options when he's not fully on it.

I loved how he dropped deep in buildup. For me something he should do more of when we're struggling to play through a press or when things are getting a bit chaotic and the game is getting away from us. Drop a bit deeper, try to take control. But again, his ability to do that and also be a threat in the final third probably partly comes down to fitness.

With tonights lineup Davies should've been captain. Maddison needs to concentrate on his own game and show some fight.

I think the last few games he has actually been much much better in that regard. He got whacked at least 6 times tonight, three of them should've been yellow cards. He is putting himself on the line currently. I had no real issues at all with him today TBH in terms of effort.

It doesn’t help his game if there aren’t runs for him to pick out. Several times in the first half he was on the ball for a while looking for a runner, only to have to pass backwards. And the ref tonight was a cnut.

The amount of times he looked off to his left for a runner to play in and there was no-one grrrrrrr...
