iPads...

I do loads on my ipad. Video editing one of the best I think, shoot edit and export all on one device. Yes you can use a PC etc but the start up time on this is ridiculously quick.

I'm a teacher and I remember last summer I went back after the break after six weeks of just using an ipad. Booted up my Laptop and it felt like going back to the stone age just trying to get online.

Get a solid state drive for your PC.

I am impressed, however, that you do video editing. The general consensus is that tablets are great for consumption, not so great for creation.

I don't think I could do my job (bang out 5,000 words a day) on one but I can manage it just fine on my Linux netbook.

i don't think that is the case, only if you read junk tech sites like ****modo, its a lazy argument

I presume it is the "not so great for creation" bit you take issue with?

I am happy to bow to your superior knowledge, but I remain sceptical that I will ever get up to 50 words a minute typing on an onscreen virtual keyboard.

FWIW, my wife has become so used to the smartphone way of doing things that she decided her next laptop will have to have a touchscreen.

On an unrelated subject, did anyone see that mobile phone that was fitted with an old rotary dial? The kids of today could not fathom how to use it; they kept jabbing at the number, rather than using the dialling device. it took them very little time to work out how to use a gramophone, however.

(Story is on The Register somewhere).

Funny how new ways of doing things quickly supplant the old ways (says the man who was once unable to fathom how to answer a ringing iPhone; shades of the monolith scene with the apes in 2001: A Space Odyssey).

TTFN.

This is off topic, but reminds me of stupid customers. I work at an Apple Store and the amount of people who touch the display of Macs to try and do things...](*,) it's like the 7 years of iPhone / 4 years of iPad has erased all general computing knowledge.

speaking of iPads and macs, i need to hire a junior IT tech, if anyone knows anyone who wants to pursue an exciting career in IT support...

Is it all that strange?

Most PCs that have the guts all built into the back of the screen are touchscreens. Most ultrabooks have touchscreens now - I was surprised that the Macbook Air didn't.

i think it works fine on a handheld device, but sat at a desk in front of an iMac that would be a bit much on the arms to use for any length of time

It is strange because touchscreen on a computer is not a natural instinct. Very, very few people would own touchscreen computers, especially the ones who are technically challenged enough that they ignore a trackpad and keyboard to press the screen.

I agree with galeforce. Can't see them being a big hit with people who use their devices for an extended period of time.

Maybe it's just me then. I've been shopping for an ultrabook lately and if I'd considered the Macbook Air before reading a review I'd have walked into an Apple store and poked at the screen.

I had the same questiones regarding the iPad, what good is it? I've had one for a few years, don't use it for anything else than browsing and email, but it's retired my laptop, almost, I'm typing on it now...

The laptop belongs to work so I can't make changes to it. However, I'd never known that using a SSD could speed up boot up time but I guess it's how a tablet works.

Would love to share with you what I've done on my ipad but because it's work related and has footage of students I can't. But I did a lip sync movie and was really happy with it. I'm an intermediate user of something like iMovie on the mac and don't think I could have done it better on that. Some of the functions, like splicing or moving video clips to match audio waveforms were easier to do with hands on screen.

I used Avid which I think is now called Pinnacle studio.

I also prefer to filming on an ipad than any other device I've used eg camcorder. I always used to think people looked right nobs out and about filming/photographing on an ipad but the massive advantage is that you get a much better feel for what the final tv picture will look like due to the screen size.

I've also done films previously with footage downloaded from YouTube etc, again 100% ipad only (iCab browser)

I also should have mentioned I use a Logitech keyboard which doubles as a case and it is lovely :)

forscene is a different kind of thing as far as i understand, you use it in conjunction with an edit platform like avid, it allows you to log/mark up the content at low res then send that info to the actual edit station, a digital paper edit if you will
