Internet taking over

We've got 3 within walking distance to us fortunately. Couldn't do without it we spend around £15-£30 a week in them. I refuse to eat supermarket meat.

All the butcher's round my way are Asian. Decent if you want some meat for curries. But no pork or decent cuts of steak e.t.c. would love an English butchers, miss it especially in barbeque season

I was thinking of doing a little course in Butchery. Or something that would enable me to buy half a cow and prepare the meat myself, Lambs and Pigs too. Apparently it brings the cost in meat down by half. Was going to suggest it to my local farmers shop I use, but I'd imagine it would be counter productive for them as a business. I have looked online but a lot of them are more how to butterfly a leg than teaching you how to breakdown a carcass.

I have also looked into maybe getting and starting my own hen egg production. I absolutely adore the Burford Brown eggs. If you have not tried them Sainsburys and Morrisons are sellers. Deep yellow yolk that is so rich in flavour you will never ever again eat the watered down anemic mass production of so called free range own brand supermarket eggs. The cost is £2 for a box of 6, but what an egg.

You can buy the hens for £30 each and can produce upto 180 eggs each year. You can buy a decent hen house for a ton on ebay, which house 5 hens. Obviously there is the fox problem but that doesn't faze me, the smell though does. But I'd love to be able to do my own eggs. Bruford Brown hens can only be sourced from the one place, anywhere else and they are more mixed breed than the real thing, think Champagne from Champagne or Reggiano for Parmesan, its the same for these hens.

Official place to purchase the hens.

The eggs are dark brown and worth the extra 50p they cost over own brand crap.
