It’s difficult to guage based on International football where outside a small number of teams (England should really be looking at winning a big tournament with the current generation of players) the standard is poor. Carsley does seem to have something about him and it would be interesting to see how he’d get on if say a mid to low ranking premier league club takes a chance on him.

I'm starting to wonder whether the problem is the sheer size of the available playing squad.

I'd really struggle to get this down to 23 players, let alone a "best eleven", let alone find a winning tactical formula.

Is it any different for other countries though?

Absolutely. What country has a pool of players as big as we've currently got? The world cup winners definitely don't. They rotate on a much smaller number and stay laser focused.

Our problem now is that the "best eleven" isn't so obvious. There's only really Rice and Bellingham who would walk into the side. Some might even disagree with that conclusion.

All depends on perception and tactical direction of ravel.
I suspect the world cup winners have a much bigger than us but they have a settled way of playing now with a settled manager that has proven to work and they choose their pool based on skillsets and other factors that align with what currently works for them.

I am not sure England's pool is any greater or lesser than previous decades, in fact maybe lesser given that there are less English players in the PL compared to before.....

I guess we'll find out whether Tuchel sprays and prays, or focuses this down to <25 players that suit his philosophy.

I hope he doesn't just go straight back to the established first 11. Some of the young fringe players really deserve to be in the mix now. Like you say, Good luck narrowing it down!
