I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

Last April we beat Man Utd and Stoke and drew with Liverpool and West Brom.
This season we have (so far) beat Stoke and Palace and drawn with Liverpool and Everton. We have conceded only 2 goals in those 4 games.

If you compare our results to the identical games last season we have exactly matched them.

If you compare the results of our first 4 games to last season then we are 5 points better off.

You are correct - but Everton were way below par personnel wise. Liverpool should have been out of site in the first 20 min. Stoke! is Stoke and we beat Palace 1-0............just

I expect more from from Poch now!

There will be an excuse you can make for the opposition in every match. I would argue that we could (and should) have beaten Everton, we got stronger as the game went on and had the chances to have won that game. Look at Everton's performances and results since they played us, our point (that should've been 3 now looks an even better result). Against Palace they had only one reasonable chance in the whole game, while we had several. We were thoroughly deserved winners. Stoke we blew away and you can only beat what is put in front of you, Liverpool were the better team against us I'll admit, but even in that game we could've won it. The only facts are the results themselves. It's funny how you disregard the chances in games that we have missed, but when Liverpool fail to take their chances against us you use it as a stick to beat us with....

I wonder if you are the sort of bloke that would get upset if you won the jackpot on the lottery just because you had to share it with somebody else?

just rewatched the first goal again a couple of times over on full matches and shows (in an attempt to see if i could understand where some of you are coming from) and i don't think him giving the ball away is as bad as whats been suggested, he picks the ball off of Diers feet and tries to pass the ball through to Alli/Eriksen but fudges up the timing and the weight of the pass rebounding off the Monaco players legs bounces very kindly for them - its the type of blocked pass you see quite often in the middle of the pitch

He tried to nutmeg their player didn't he?

I think something that this illustrates is why defensive midfield players are often labelled as poor passers of the ball. It is not that they are poor passers, but probably just that they always go for the safe option as the penalty for the giving the ball away back there is often severe.

that's why i re watched it, wanted to see whether or not i had miss-remembered from the game - and in all honesty it doesn't look like he tried to nutmeg him to me - was certainly a pass to either Eriksen or Kane further up the field to his left as far as i can see, just a very bad/costly one in the end.

agree on the second part

It looked to me a pass through the legs rather than a nutmeg.
But you know what, he fudged up and we lost let's move on. Some off the navel gazing on this is incredible. It's been picked apart and done to death now on these boards.

He either tried to nutmeg the midfielder, or he kicked it straight into the player (he didn't it was an attempted nutmeg)!

Arguably Lamela's been our best attacking player this season. Prior to this game he looked like he was playing on a different level to everyone else. Want him applying his considerable skills in the opposition half, and keeping discipline in his own when tracking back.

He wasn't great against Monaco, but I thought we really missed him after he went off. He gives us a lot not only in final third creativity, but also in receiving the ball in tighter areas and moving it on with purpose and we kinda lost that after he went off. We became more static and easier to deal with for Monaco.

Spot on for me.

There's a difference between choosing the safe option and not having the required skill to make the risk-benefit of a higher risk option make sense. Proper deep playmakers get the ball in very similar situations to those you describe where "defensive midfielders" always go for the safe option. And those deep playmakers do not always go for the safe option. Compared to them, and even good box to box players, and definitely players like Eriksen and Lamela most defensive midfielders are poor passers.

I wish we had a deep playmaker who was willing to accept a decent amount or risk.

A goal and 3 assists last night for our Erik. Not a bad run out.

Well done that man!

He was head and shoulder above the other 21 players. It was actually like watching someone drop down and play in a younger age group. At times he almost couldn't seem to believe it was so easy for him.

Along with Eriksen they run the game. If i was Pooch/ coaching staff i would be encouraging him to use his right foot more. If he could do this he would be unreadable.

Think he is trying, and you are right, if he adds that little variation to his game, he could be quite scary to play against.
