I watched it. 5 from our list is very hard. I did like that he chose longevity, time at the club and impact. Obviously for me he would be in the 5. Greaves I agreed with and Perryman. I knew he would pick Ossie and he is another good pick. I suppose the only one I did not agree with was Chivers but that is because he is more before my time. Id go ledley or Mabbutt myself. Then his pick of Kane.
Not our best-ever five players but based on Hoddle's own terms of reference, e.g. longevity & cultural significance, it's a justifiable list.
For those too young to remember Big Chiv, he had power and skill - probably more so than Kane. He was not a bad finisher but was not as good as Kane. If he had possessed Kane's drive and nous he'd have been world-class. Spurs used to occasionally break the transfer record in those days and I think Chiv, at £125,000, was a league-record signing at that time. Money well spent. Ditto Martin Peters, another record signing, although that was tinged with sadness because it meant Greaves left the club.
Ossie was similar to Modric. He was tough, knitted play together and was very smart. Not as good IMV as Modric but undoubtedly more of a Spurs man. "I have no problem with Graeme Souness. He kicks me; I kick him back." - Ossie.
I can't believe he left Mackay out but that's the nature of these lists.
