Have We Got The Worst Atmosphere In The Country

There is no doubt that the game has changed and the same can be said of the fans, there is so much entitlement among a large portion of fans in todays game and sad to say our club is well up the list on that. Going to football used to be about going and watching a game where their team was playing.

A good crack before, during and after the game was the order of the day but again sadly there is so much entitlement from the fans which seems to be far more prevelant then it ever was.

No one forces us to spend our money on attending games but it amazes me that if/when we do not play well/win a large number of fans will moan and grown. Of course everyone has the right to be dissapoined when we lose but at the end of the day its our choice to attend the games. Sadly it seems a lot of fans would rather bitch and moan then offer support instead of moaning about this player that player or the owners.

This..

There was much more of a siege mentality where fans at least got behind the side. Now its almost a "deliver to me and I will sing" attitude whilst sitting their praising all Chelsea and Arsenal do...........yes that happens alot, it happens on here too.
'Here we are now.....entertain us' ;)

Tbh dragging people to be vocally supportive or creating initiatives to 'enhance' the atmosphere is like pushing water up a hill. It's trying to tackle it from the wrong end.

These things are best when they happen organically. The age profile doesn't help. You are more open to things, and generally have more enthusiasm, when you're younger. Furthermore the club 'creating' something is probably the last thing our 'ultra' cousins from Europe would need or even want. Quite the opposite, I'm sure they enjoy being a law unto themselves.

Looking at the Palace Holmesdale group..
The men (I'm not discounting the vocal women btw) in particular, enjoy the community, tribal, part of belonging to something. Where that part is looked forward to on match day as much as the game itself. That's what fuels it. How they got to this point, I'm not sure? Did the club facilitate them all ending up in the same area? Were a big group mates already?

I don't hold out much hope tbh, it's partly why I'd rather wander down to support my local step 3 team. It's endearing how they have their own group of 50ish 'ultras' all aged 12-15 behind the goal every week. All part of something, all there every week. Always singing.

Its a fallacy that the The Old Lane was always a bedlam of noise, for the last three years of it's existence I had a ST in the north upper , very little singing or chants up there.

Absolutely true. Can't speak to the glory days but back in the 90s when I'd go regularly with my mum we'd always laugh with each other about how ridiculously quiet it would get in the Lane.
The only other grounds I've attended regularly enough to make a comparison would be Goodison and the old Baseball Ground in Derby, both of which were always pretty much rocking for the whole game. And the football was just as bad or, usually, worse.

We have an odd fanbase.

I’ve been to Goodison a fair few times and it was a morgue each time! Loud when they score and just after but generally dead. I don’t doubt v Pool they get up for it, but that is the exception. Had a mate who went to Uni in Liverpool as well, he had a season ticket there for a couple of years and said the same. Lovely old ground, but it really was rarely rocking..

Totally agree with your last point though, our fanbase is very odd, almost like it’s cool to be negative and praise everything about your rivals (even when they weren’t better!) whilst looking down at anyone who shows positivity. Doesn’t lend itself to a good atmosphere at the ground.

I haven't been to Goodison for 20+ years to be fair.
