Harry Kane MBE

It's just a generational thing. Lineker is old school, brought up imbued with the spirit of 66 and all that, and the idea that playing in a World Cup was the pinnacle of a player's career. Lampard et al. are probably more likely to get excited about the identity of a new tournament sponsor.

Lampards generation is scared brickless that the current lot will get to a semi final or better and show his lot for what they were, over rated bunch of tw*ts who only played for themselves and not as a team.

Who let Adrian Durham in here?

I take it that those 16 games refer to his Champions' League outings with Blackburn (6 matches) and Saudi Sportswashing Machine (10). 7 goals and 2 assists isn't a bad record given the teams he was in.

What about the 11 matches (including 2 as a sub) spread over Euro '92, '96 and 2000 (7 goals, no assists)? Including the 4-1 against Holland -- if ever a university housemate was feeling down, one of us would nip to the library, get that out on VHS, and we'd crack open a few beers.

Or the 4 in the '98 World Cup (2 goals)?

What about the Prem matches against ManU, Arsenal and Liverpool?

Okay, your point still stands about a small proportion of Shearer's games being at the very top level, but that's the same for most players. I would rate scoring for the 00's Saudi Sportswashing Machine side against Fergie's ManU higher than CRonaldo banging in a hattrick for Real Madrid against Getafe, for example.

I also agree that Kane is better. But, for me, he's got to keep on doing it for at least another 3 or 4 seasons to be mentioned alongside Shearer.
Most players aren't claimed to be amongst the best ever. Those that are spend a chunk of their careers at clubs that matter outside their own city.

Had Ronaldo left Utd and gone to Palace, performed as their best player by far and scored a load of PL goals, people wouldn't talk about him in the same way they do now. To claim to be amongst the very best, a player has to challenge themselves and best that challenge, not take the easy route by hiding away where nobody will notice them.

I wonder if the reactions of players from different era's is related to mental conditioning from their playing days in any way. More recent retiree's have been coached to not overreact, to process the goal and reset defensively, iirc Lampard was often pretty reserved after his own goals.

Another article about himself, this week punctated by comments about Kane.
Amazing, literally anything can be twisted:D He talks about Kane and the team a lot more than he does himself. All he did was mention himself for a couple of sentences before continuing to go on about Kane and England. But how weird of him to talk about his experiences as captain and main striker of England at a major tournament, theres literally no reason for him to do that when talking about Kane leading the way for England is there....

Lighten up mate.

You are quite simply a fudging idiot or a WUM.

Do you seriously think Ronaldo would be considered as good as he is if he'd wasted his career a Saudi Sportswashing Machine or Charlton?

Confirmed. A fudging idiot and a WUM.

We were the second best team around when he joined. Then finished in the top 5 in 4 of the next 8 seasons.

Charlton? fudge off.

Everton at best then.

Charlton are a good comparison because nobody outside of Saudi Sportswashing Machine pays attention to what happens at that club. Shearer could have scored a hattrick in every match up there and the football world would barely have noticed.

When someone is chatting as much BS about a player as he is, I don’t know why you entertain it. I guess Kane won’t be considered all that until he’s ‘spent a chunk of his career outside his home city’....

In the north west you mean, is that when Sunderland had Niall Quinn?

Charlton are Palace right, they merged at some point didn’t they?
