The medieval legend of St George and the dragon is over a thousand years old. The tale goes that the dragon made it’s nest by the fresh water spring near the town of Silene in Libya. When people came to collect water, they inadvertently disturbed the dragon and so offered sheep as a distraction.

After time, there were simply no sheep left to offer the dragon and so the people of Silene decided to chose a maiden from the town by drawing lots. When the results were read, it was revealed that the princess was to be the dragon’s next victim. Despite the Monarch’s protest his daughter Cleolinda was offered to the dragon...

However, at the moment of offering, a knight from the Crusades came riding by on his white stallion. St George dismounted and drew his sword, protecting himself with the sign of the cross. He fought the dragon on foot and managed to slay the beast and saved the princess. The people of Silene were exceptionally grateful and abandoned their pagan beliefs to convert to Christianity.

Oh buhu, our national pride isn't appreciated.

If there was a proper global community a couple hundred years after the vikings stopped raping and pillaging your lands I would probably be slightly cautious about proclaiming my Scandinavian pride too ;)

*ducks for cover*

How did Saint George end up as our patron when he never so much as set foot on British soil?
Whilst Saint Alban, who was the first Christian to become a martyr in England, go largely unacknowledged

Had 6 different people today tell me how it does their nut in that we don't celebrate st George's day enough while we apparently all celebrate st patricks day. Asked them all what they had planned for this evening all of em said nothing just sitting at home. Their attitude about sums this country up ****ing lazy always looking for someone else to organise something or whatever. All moaning that none of the pubs are doing anything? Is that really what st George's day is all about? Fair play to marky going out doing whatever he deems a good way to celebrate the day of our patron saint. If you want To celebrate the day go and ****ing do it just don't moan tomorrow that we don't and don't use the excuse that your local pub doesn't have a few plastic flags on the outside to not celebrating it.

Every single year, a lady colleague of mine buys a load of big (living) red roses for everyone in the office to pin on themselves.

Every year I take it home for my little girl and tell her what it's for. She cherishes it.

Happy St George's Day everyone.

Just about recovered from this!! Went out on a bender with a few others who truly appreciate St George's day. Went to Great Yarmouth for a long weekend. Plenty of good old English food and drink in a pub with Spitfires hanging from the ceiling lol it was superb!!!! Great thread Marky!!!!

Yup, George's career as a builder is largely forgotten about these days, can't make a living killing dragons.

Happy birthday to you too Rock.
