I am perplexed with the statement that ,"we only got 5th because Liverpool self destructed." We achieved 5th because, over the course of 38 games we accumulated more points than them simple as. Were we not above Liverpool at various points of the season not just at the end? I am a little disappointed although not surprised that several posters are trying to belittle the achievements of this season. I think the last time we finished in the top 6 and reached a cup final was before the inception of the PL.

Could not agree more I hear some say we finished where we did because other teams blew up, well did we not also blow up at times. We finished where we did because we were better and obtained more points then the teams below us. Simple.

It is simple if you want to define a whole season by a single number, 5th place. Why even bother checking the results every weekend, just look up our league position every May!

You enter anything to do as well as you can, finishing 5th means that you are the fifth best team in the Lge over 38 games. You can try and confuse it as much as you want its still the truth. Sorry mate but you post is stupid and foolish at best.

I do think we backed into 4th a bit and just think where we could have ended up if we didn't have to play 10+ EL games, dropping points nearly every sunday

i assume you mean 5th?

the problem with this thinking is, imv, is that it's very short sighted and doesn't factor in that everyone around us either has the same cross to bear or will do the following season - not being in Europe whilst our league rivals are may give us an advantage for one season - but then what? the following season we will be in Europe (provided it makes as much difference as people suggest) and then we'll be right back where we started.

It seems that some have difficulty in understanding that.

exactly, we have to get used to two games a week, because if we get to where we want to be thats what we'll get

I remember when Chelsea got 6th and won the champions league. 5th makes us better than the best in Europe.

Um... We qualify for the CL, purchase players who otherwise would not have signed for us, and have a bigger & stronger squad the next season as a result; one that is capable of qualifying for the CL again (that couldn't have been assembled with consecutive 5th placed finishes).

Simple really.

just like in 10/11?

only this time it will be even harder as all four of the established clubs have greater spending power

The season prior to Poch's arrival was one of turmoil . Bale leaving, Adebayor staying and undermining the manager, the AVB and Levy fallout. Then there were Sherwood and although I were willing to give him a chance, he quickly piissed me off with his antics. And then there were the failure of our new signings , especially the experienced Soldado, who at times had me banging my head in total disbelief at his misses.

But then Poch arrived and although I wasn't overly keen, or even sure about his qualities, I soon got to like him for how he were conducting himself and the talk of his football philosophy.\:cool:/

Our season started with Dier's injury time winner at the Spams. Dier along with Mason, Rose, Lamela, Eriksen and Bentaleb gave the team energy , they also gave me energy, and those injury time winners were more a shock to me when they didn't happen! And then Harry Kane came along and we sang, he's one of our own . He also got me teary eyed with his headed goal against the Goons similar to that night at The Etihad , when Crouchy nutted it in .

I like Poch and I've fallen in love again with my team . If we play clever and stick to the course we're currently on, I do believe we will achieve things that will surpass many of our expectations. I say, we keep the faith. COYS...
