Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas watches Celtic's Gary Hooper with eye on making a bid
Tottenham Hotspur may enter the bidding for the signature of Celtic striker Gary Hooper.
With Emmanuel Adebayor on duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, Jermain Defoe is the only recognised striker available to the London club at the moment.
Manager Andre Villas-Boas was at Parkhead to run the rule over the 24-year-old at Tuesday night’s match against Dundee United as Celtic confirmed that they had rejected a second offer from Norwich City for the player.
It was also disclosed that Celtic are prepared to withdraw the improved and extended contract on offer to Hooper if he fails to put pen to paper before the transfer window closes in eight days’ time.
“It’s not the latest offer because we made the offer three months ago and it’s been sitting on the table ever since,” the Celtic manager told BBC Radio Scotland.
“We’re disappointed that these things have come out in public again. I don’t know where they are coming from, but they are certainly not coming from us.
“Gary didn’t like the look of the contract three months ago and nothing has changed. We think it’s a good offer and would put him in the top two of three earners.
“I’m sure he wants to be the highest paid but sometimes you can’t get what you want. We have [made] an improved offer and that’s been turned down automatically.
“The second offer from Norwich wasn’t that much bigger than the first offer. It was nowhere near £6 million. It was completely rejected and even if it [had been] £6 million it would be completely rejected.”
With Juventus due in Glasgow in the Champions League round of 16 on Feb 12, Lennon is sanguine about the situation. “Our thinking is that come the come Feb 1 the contract offer will be withdrawn,” he said. “Gary and his representatives have a lot to think about.”
