Re: Gareth Bale
I still think a record fee is vital to Brand Bale, if Real offered 79million euros and Spurs accepted or 60million + players i don't think Bale would go and imho thats at least part of any reason why he hasn't been pushing or agitating in any way for a move.
Its clear he knows he is still some way behind Messi and Ronaldo (playing in a more competitive league is part of the reason though) but becoming the most expensive footballer in the history of the game in some ways puts him on a par, and in the eyes of the non-football obsessed world, possibly
above them.
Being the most expensive footballer IMMEDIATELY makes you the number one target for ANY brand that markets themselves as ultra-exclusive, its an instant xx% monetary increase on any endorsements he signs. Its worldwise news in any and all magazines and newspaper and tv shows and websites that have nothing to do directly with football or sport generally.
I fully expect him to either sign a brand new contract or a years extension if for no other reason than to protect HIS value in any transfer thus giving him the chance to be the worlds most expensive football signing at some point. If he is forced to stay he will sign, i don't think he will allow his potential cost to fall by having just 2yrs left.
I am by no means insinuating he is personally money driven, i think this is about acclaim, recognition and position within the sporting world.
OK, shoot that down, i thought i would offer another angle
EDIT: i forgot to mention, again in my opinion, he would be wearing the red of Man U for 2-3yrs starting this summer if SAF was still in charge, then a move to Real.
