It's a cup competition, Chelsea proved last season that the best team doesn't always win it, you just need a good draw or an incredible amount of luck. Even Barca didn't win it every season in their prime. Fergie reached 4 finals and numerous semif finals too. Bayern have only won it twice since the 70s, Arsenal never won it despite being one of the best teams in Europe for a 5-6 year stretch. Plus, it's hardly like United can outspend Barca and Madrid. Most of the best South Americans go to Spain as its the same language essentially. Madrid have outspent just about everybody in the last decade and they haven't won it since the early noughties. I think even Fergie would admit he could have won it more, but to knock someone for "only winning it twice" is preposterous. There's only one manager in the history of the game who's won the European cup more than twice.
I think thats a fair comment on Fergusson tbh - 2 CL in 27 years, for what is considered by many as the biggest club in the world, isn't exactly a great record.
Man United dwarfed everyone in England financially once the Sky tv/premier league windfall kicked in in the early 90s giving them a huge advantage domestically - but in Europe, up against similar financed Clubs they never had anywhere near the same dominence.
Still though he's probably the best domestic manager of the last quarter century.
