Gareth Bale

Re: Gareth Bale

One thing I hate is this sort of reverse gamesmanship that comes into play with players with reputations like Bale & Suarez. They go down under a challenge and the fouler and his mates whip up this faux-outrage in the hope that the ref (and crowd) will think it's another dive. Agger and his troglodyte partner are two of the worst at this, along with Paul Robinson the defender and the duck-billed platypus that sometimes lines up for United.

I have christened this term jiving and hope that it's soon eradicated from our beautiful game. Jiving bastards.

Re: Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale has given the clearest indication yet that he sees his future beyond White Hart Lane, most likely in Spain, after saying that he will “look seriously” at attractive offers from overseas.

The 23 year-old, who is a long-standing transfer target of Real Madrid and Barcelona, has also spoken of an interest in living outside the United Kingdom and playing in another league.

The timing of Bale’s remarks, which were made after Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-0 win against Fulham on Saturday, is especially significant given that Andre Villas-Boas, the Spurs manager, appeared to hint last week that he could leave if a sufficient offer was forthcoming.

Villas-Boas did then release a further statement on Thursday, saying that the club had “no intention” of selling their star player.

Bale, though, has opened the door to a possible move. “It would be nice to experience other leagues and other cultures,” he said. “I’m not afraid to go abroad. If the time comes and a team that’s right comes in for me, then I’ll look at it seriously. I’ll see what happens.”

It is significant, though, that Bale signed a four-year deal during the summer that tied him to the club until 2016 on £75,000 a week.

That would place Tottenham in a strong negotiating position if Bale did decide to leave and serious offers were made by Barcelona or Real Madrid.

With Spurs having successfully held out for £30 million for Luka Modric last summer, it is difficult to imagine chairman Daniel Levy even considering any offers below £40 million for Bale. The Spanish clubs can take heart, however, from that fact that Levy has shown that he is willing to sell a star player if the money is right.

Tottenham’s progress this season will also have a significant bearing on the situation. Bale has always been very happy at Tottenham but said in April that he would have to talk about his situation if the club were not in the Champions League.

He was part of the team that reached the quarter-finals under Harry Redknapp in 2010 but this is Tottenham’s second successive season in the Europa League.

When Bale talks of the “right” team, it is difficult to imagine him considering any offers outside of Real Madrid or Barcelona. Jose Mourinho, the Real Madrid manager, has been a long-standing admirer of Bale and Tottenham also have close ties with Madrid after announcing a “partnership” during the summer that was cryptically said to include “working together in respect of players”.

Modric also said last week that Bale “dreams” of winning the Champions League and claimed that Madrid, where he could play alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, would be a “great” move for him.

Barcelona, though, cannot be discounted. Harry Redknapp, the former Tottenham manager, was forced earlier this year to deny claims from Spain that a £32 million deal was already in place for Bale and the player is regularly mentioned in the Catalan media. Bale described being linked to Barcelona as “flattering” earlier this year.

Bale, who has scored six goals in 14 Premier League appearances, also spoke on Saturday about his increasingly high profile. “I never really think about being famous. As soon as you realise how big you are, that’s when you lose yourself,” he said.

Bale’s declaration came after a mixed afternoon at Craven Cottage, with the Wales international suffering a hamstring injury that will probably keep him out of Thursday’s Europa League game against Panathinaikos and Sunday’s Premier League match at Everton.

He was also cautioned for diving for the second time in four days, having received a yellow card against Liverpool at White Hart Lane on Wednesday. He now has seven bookings this season.

“We just talk about the fact he is near a suspension,” Villas-Boas said. “If he has a reputation, it is a little bit unfair because these last two bookings have been unfairly given. It is very difficult to judge players at this pace. They are so quick and it’s not easy for the referees.”

Jermain Defoe, who scored twice at Fulham, described Bale’s absence over the next week as “a massive blow”. He said: “Because of the way he plays you can’t really replace a player like that, but at the same time I think someone else can come in.

“We’re lucky because we’ve got some great players that can come in, play out of position, adapt and do a job for the team. I think we will be OK.”

Sandro scored Tottenham’s first goal on Saturday before Defoe continued his outstanding form as the main central striker in Spurs’ 4-2-3-1 formation with a 13th and 14th goal of the season.

Defoe was previously managed at Tottenham by Martin Jol but the Fulham manager did not seem convinced by the way he has adapted his game. “If you look at the goals he scored, you could have scored them – he is a poacher,” Jol said.

Re: Gareth Bale

For all his faults Foy is known to be reluctant to send players off so maybe Bale knew that and took a calculated risk. Most refs would not have have hesitated. But it'slooking like it's going to take a sending off and a ban before Bale finally gets the message.

He sent Kaboul off for next to nothing IIRC. What message does Bale need to get, he's being victimized by refs, so now he has to cramp his game and adverely affect us because of ridiculous reffing.

If Bale can't run freely at pace he's nowhere the player he is when he can, When clumsy defenders take him out that should result in fouls and cards against them, not Gareth.

Re: Gareth Bale

Now the club needs to back Bale.
The referees are responsible for losing great talent from the EPL due to their poor decision making.

Re: Gareth Bale

From a referee's perspective:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...sent-reaction-diving-Fulham--Graham-Poll.html
Andre Villas-Boas raised a fair and valid point when he said that Bale has suffered a lot of injuries and often tries to avoid contact as the pace he plays at leaves him susceptible to knocks even after slight contact. It is also very difficult for him to keep his balance at such electrifying pace.

Referees will be looking for unnatural falls and the way Bale goes down is dramatic and often not consistent with the amount of contact.

*Daily Mail tries to put on a sensationalist headline by linking Bale's "dive" with a sent off, but I don't think it's what Poll is talking about.

Re: Gareth Bale

Good article.

Interesting second section....sounds sensible.

There are obvious comparisons with former Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo, who in his early days at Old Trafford also used to hit the turf on a regular basis.

Having refereed both, I have to say that they are different players at different points in their careers. Ronaldo was new to English football, having come from Portugal where players going to ground is an accepted practise – he thought that was right. Bale understands the Premier League and the expectations within it.

Referees need to study the DVDs of Bale very closely and think about their approach towards him. Why, for example, would he dive in a neutral position in midfield?

Could it be that he is wary of getting injured and is pulling out of challenges - not to ‘con’ the referee into giving a free-kick, but to avoid injury?

Is he appealing for the free-kick or just getting up and on with the game? After all, when a referee is unsure there is nothing wrong with playing on in such a situation.

Perhaps a meeting between a senior referee and Bale and his manager would help each other see the opposing viewpoint. At that meeting, I would hope that the referee’s side would point out that whatever the decision, Bale should not applaud sarcastically as he did on Saturday. That should have resulted in his dismissal for a second caution.

Re: Gareth Bale

Its funny because the article misses the entire point ie why didn't Foy the **** give a foul when it was clear the challenge did not make contact with the ball and that the challenge cut across Bales path?

I need to write an article (maybe with some pics n stuff :)

Re: Gareth Bale

Has he? Thought it was ony five so far?

Defoe continued his outstanding form as the main central striker in Spurs’ 4-2-3-1 formation with a 13th and 14th goal of the season.

Was it? Thought it goal no.11 and 12?

Am I going daft, or was this more poor journalism?

Re: Gareth Bale

With Bale out against Everton, it got us all thinking about whether Dempsey and Siggy could cover on the left in his absence.

I noticed that Townsend has hardlky been used this season; anyone wonder whether AVB really does not fancy him??

Re: Gareth Bale

I'd rather Falque come in for him. He's pretty much the most creative footballer we have at the club. No surprise seeing that he is Spanish.

Dempsey on the left, Ade in behind Defoe. Simples.

Re: Gareth Bale

Yes, but why does Townsend hardly get a mention (or a game) these days??

AVB want to flog him the QPR instead??

Maybe I should be quite about that one before some journalist writes up an article somewhere....8-[

He was featuring off the bench a bit earlier in the season then in the game against Maribor he had a very poor game, was replaced by Falque who turned the game around and got us a point. Pretty much since that game he hasn't featured one little bit I believe.

I like Townsend but Dempsey is better, he's proven Prem quality, also at international level too.

Sandro Dembele Lennon Clint Ade JD, front 6 for me.

I'd rather Siggy/Hudd/Carroll in before Falque, I think he's way down the list.

Indeed, given that Ade probably cost us the game at Arsenal, I wouldn't mind Siggy or Hudd playing instead of him at Goodison.
