Gambling

I gamble, I love it, I only bet what I can afford to lose end of..

I dont have to bet everyday, I bet when I want...

Agree with this. I also stick to what I know, football. I don't bother betting on dogs or horses when both sports are bent as a nine bob note. I do an accumulator every week, plus the occasional bet on one off events such as the Super Bowl. I'll probably do a few bets during the Euros, top goal scorer, scorecasts in certain games, winner of the tournament, stuff like that. When you bet on certain games, it gives them an edge when you watch it!

This to all of that. It really doesn't have to be harmful or addictive, and undeniably gives you a bit of a buzz when something like an accumulator comes in. Will also make the Euros that bit more interesting this summer.

I bet but not a serial gambler. I only bet on football and generally a tenner a weekend on an accumulator. A tenner during the week if there is more or less a full round of fixtures. mainly, like the posters above, to give me something to entertain me whilst seeing the scores come in.

If I win I win 2-400 quid if I lose well... I lose a tenner

Exactly - that's the spirit!

If thick people end up in debt from gambling, you could bet (heh, heh) your bottom dollar that they'd of ended up in debt from something else - it's a personality trait. These people don't need appologists around them, they need honesty and a sense of self-responsiblity.

I'll never forget a legendary night I had a few summers back: mega leaving bonus from work so we all went out on the lash. Few boys from work to kick things off, then my betting pals showed up later on. We were licked off our faces and came up with the plan we'd all head on down to Laddies on the Strand and smash the evening BAGS. We did - walked out with ?ú10k cash between us, then trotted off down to Spearmints and Secrets and spunked the lot. Fell asleep in the toilet and had Brutus the Impaler scrape me up off the floor next morning and took me for a breakfast at a greasy spoon around the corner. fudging mental night.

Sorry but calling people thick is a dim view.

Bookmakers have spent fortunes on physiological behavior and studying cognitive thinking in the past. Even games like Farmville uses techniques that keep a user hooked and is now the biggest stream of revenue on facebook.

People start off slow and get sucked in. They are not the thick ones, they are simply the vulnerable ones caught in the crosshairs of a corrupt business that is becoming increasingly common on our high streets.

What happened to ?ú25 limit fruit machines that have been replaced with ?ú100 a spin roulette machines on our high streets? These devices should be for an odd occasion like when visiting a casino on a night out.

And just so you know I gamble no more than a tenner a week, if that on the football. I have however seen people who have become sucked in to games like roulette who bordered on taking their own lives because they lost control.

You dont understand and never will until you become educated in seeing it with your own eyes and you can come back and reply all you want with reasons to why you believe you know better or why people should know better. Until you see addiciton and the effects it has on the person, their families and their mental health you will always just be guessing.

The world is full of people who take things to extremes, we all have a responsibility to control what we do and if those who can not do so i am not interested in their sob stories. Saying no seems to be a word that some fail to be able to live within, and then look for excuses for their plights.

Total rubbish. So biology has nothing to do with it? So should deaf people be blamed for being deaf?

Some people have more will power than others. Just like it takes a certain person to become a bodybuilder to hit the gym 4 times a week and take on a strict diet.

Some people have physiological strenghs while others have weaknesses.

I do not deny that but we all have the will power to say no, i have had a addiction but never went crying about it i got off my arse and stopped feeling sorry for myself and sorted it. I do like the way you discuss a topic though, start off by calling someones elses opinion rubbish, you are obviously a very intelligent guy. :-"

I agree partly with parklane but also with spursman. To say I've seen it all, first hand and from a distance, is an understatement!!!

I don't bet online either as I feel like it's not like your betting with real money. If you go into a bookies and place a bet, then your physically giving them money.

I can agree with a lot of what Spurs man says, but I believe it's down ultimately down to personal responsibility. I remember when I turned 18 I bet a stupid amount of money on Milan to beat Inter in a Champions League semi final 2nd leg, they won the tie but in extra time so I didn't win my bet. My old man slaughtered me for betting too much money and I quickly learned that you bet what your comfortable losing.

So you summarize my intelligence based on a forum reply... You should give Mensa a call and save them all the hassle with their tests.

As for my reply calling your opinion rubbish, I have every right to as it was totally that.

If it was so simple to say 'no' then there would be no drug addicts, no smokers and no people overweight.

Addiction is not as simple as that.

Go and read one of the thousands of published papers written out there by people who have studied the very subject, many of them ex psychologists or experts who have spent their career on the very subject.

It's a shame you don't continue the debate and instead revert to such a poor response.

My view is based on hands on experience.

Putting our differences aside. One day just go to your local bookmakers and observe those machines for an hour or so.

Put my football bet on this morning and I saw a man place over 2 grand in one. He played the money in segments, just like how people play fruit machines. Staked money, lost it and staked some more as he got suckered in expecting the next spin to pay somthing back.

His face after said a thousand words.

If I were you I'd take that response. The alternative is a hate filled rant that would have little logic behind it.

As for gambling, as someone who was mortgage free before I was 25 due to gambling wins (although from poker, never beat the bookie) I'll probably sound a hypocrite when I say the world would probably be better off without it.

Through my involvement in it I learnt to never trust a gambler, as well as some real horror stories. Its not like alcohol where millions do it regularly and a small % get addicted, gambling has a far higher % who are addicted for those who are regulars in the bookies/casino. Even the people who aren't addicted will still lose money, making it completely pointless.

People who bet on sports normally stay in control (but still lose), but the real problem is online casinos (and proper ones). People just seem to lose all control, even strong disciplined people. I was at a live poker event (won entry through betfair) where one guy made 8k from his tournament place, took him 17 minutes to lose it on the roulette wheel and he wasn't even a big gambler. But the amount of lying, conning and delusion I saw was unreal, loads had ruined their life through it (not that they admit it, only ever hear about a gamblers wins dont we).

America have done a lot to stop online gaming because of the issues it caused.

Wow you did well on the poker scene golf? Might as well put it in this thread. That I can remember, and your welcome to slaughter me and call me a dingdong (I would) I have won ?ú17000 on the roulette machines. However....

I sit here aged 28 with no debts but no savings either (well maybe a grand actually) so what does that tell you? I've lost everything I've won. Crucially, I've never been tempted to use my own money when going through a bad patch.

In one day, my best, I turned ?ú75 into ?ú2800.00. Online in an hour and a half then started staking ?ú150 a spin. Madness.

I did well online, most of the time was consistent small wins adding up, plus a few big tournaments I managed to get lucky in. Not known on the live scene and generally stayed away from it as I didnt like what I saw.

But as for your wins/loss... its difficult to stay ahead isn't it ? Your story is probably normal, people win then up the stakes and eventually lose. Thats why I decided to move away from serious poker, scared I was going to lose it all.

So many cant stop though and use every penny they have plus borrow. I dont think I've ever met anyone who made regular money from casinos in the same way people have from poker or sports betting. Online casinos are terrible with the instant money available 24/7. They cause a lot of trouble for a lot of people, they cost an affordable amount for a lot of people, very few will win. Seems pointless that these arent regulated more.

Even though you only lost what you won I bet you didnt feel too good after the losing sessions. Some people would react badly to it. I might look into the reason behind america banning a lot of it.

If you had took the time to read my post properly you would have seen i said i do not deny what you said. As for your intelligence level well i think that is pretty clear, intelligent conversations ends when you call someone else's opinion rubbish. I know all about addictions and the harm it can do, but you obviously carry a flag for all the vulnerable souls who can not say no. You are not a social worker by any chance are you.

whilst we're at it, the government should introduce bans on taking money out of cash points when you're drunk. I spent a small fortune in a strip club the other night, and it wasn't my fault, not at all!

i know one thing, when gambling is introduced to a sport, said sport is corrupted. I remember when betting on football was introduced and a certain African born Liverpool goalie started diving over the ball and allowing all sorts of soft goals. Wwhen betting was allowed on cricket, suddenly Pakistan began losing test matches from winning positions. Strange isn't it? Even stanger that mugs bet their hard earned on it.

Gary.

Nobody gambles on cycling and look how dodgy that sport is.

You can't blame gambling on all of the worlds problems.

That's his own fault not gamblings.
