FIFA Planning To Expand World Cup From 2026

That chart it quite entlightening. Can't really argue about Africa gettting more teams, but Asia and North America are clearly going to send some patsies. A decade or so ago, Africa was not so strong and the case for 9 would be poor. In future the case for Asia might be justified, but perhaps the case for africa would be stronger still. It would be better to expand slowly so additional spots are allocated on merit.

The marathon South American qualifying will become even more pointless. 18 games to select 6 from 10. They should merge into a single Americas confederation, which would still have less members than Europe and Africa.

Why not just do away with qualifying completely, it looks like eventually FIFA want to give everyone a go at playing in a world cup, teams like Mexico and New Zealand just from a first glance could play youth teams and qualify now.

Or maybe just do qualifying for all the teams ranked 50+ in the world rankings, that would make sense but there's no money in it for FIFA so that's a non starter of course.
