FA Cup Semi Final OMT ***Tottenham Hotspur FC v Manchester United***

Both this game and the Juve one have some things in common. Dominated early, played very well. Let the opposition back in, not strong enough in defense, and maybe lacked a bit of belief to get over the line.

We played well against Juve and first half today, so lots to build upon. How Poch shores up our defense is crucial. Its our foundation, and needs to be solid again next season.

Actually every cup game we have lost this season we have lead... been comfortable and then lost...

That’s a damning thing to read

One thing that noone’s really talked about is how fudging easy Utd’s second goal was. Goal kick, flick-on, square and finish from a midfield runner. Maybe just an issue with Dembele’s fitness, not tracking the runner, but you’d hope that it would take more than that to be so easily undone.

It was a disgrace from start to finish. One straight ball caused that much trouble and we never recovered. You would be fuming with sunday league sides defending like that.

Outrageous isn't it? We are supposed to be one of the best four teams in this country and every cup game we have lost we have thrown away a lead.

We have the answer. It's Alderweireld.

I kinda agree with what you are saying and new season = fresh optimism but I do wonder what exactly the problem is getting over the line. 8 Semi final defeats in a row is a pretty horrific stat, all different teams and eras but it does smack of something slightly more troubling. Even breaking that down to the last 8 years, that's 4 semi finals we have failed to show the required character and resilience to just reach the final, not even win it, just reach the final.

Winning away at Chelsea is a big result, of course it is, but in a big knockout game, winner takes all not lose and move on to next week like the league, we have succeeded really only once against AC MIlan and possibly against Sheffield Utd in 2015 although we almost roostered that up as well. Other than that, every big game over two legs or one where it is win or die, we have died. Something has got to be collectively and individually wrong with that hasn't it? To say in 10 years or so you have managed to win 2 massive games and roostered up all the rest is pretty monumental tbh

I think these historical failings can probably be a monkey on the current players’ backs. I think that’s been an issue for recent England squads too.

Then again, since 1991 the FA Cup has only been won 3 times by a non-rich-5 club, and the CL never has. So it’s not as if loads of other teams have been doing what we can’t. I think at the moment we’re a victim of our own (modest) success in some ways.

Well..finally, just got back from Wembley. Thanks M6...

Didn't go with any expectations of us winning, so it was no surprise really.

Sadly you cant play for just 15-20 mins in a big match, that opening quarter we looked really good and could/should have been 3-0 up, but once they equalised we looked like a boxer with a punch to the ribs. We just never recovered from it probably.
The 2nd half we just looked lost, so United really did not need much help, but my GHod did they get it though. I did question the appointment of a Manchester referee.

Okay, he was not the reason we lost, but he didn't help.

As it is, at 55, I am now beginning to resign myself to the fact that not only will I never see my team win the league in my lifetime, crikey, I am not even sure I will see them reach another FA Cup final.

Now we need a reaction like we had after the Pompey defeat and last season's and win the last 4 games

as has already been said, it really is the hope that kills you, I thought I was over getting disappointed with tottenham but its hit me again, its always one step forward, 2 steps back with this club, its over 10 years since we won a trophy now, none of the current top 5/6 have had such futility, even the scum with all their "problems" are still in a cup competition, i'm sure the media are already penning their headlines on us being sexy again. They may have a point, as good as Poch is, he never has won a trophy and we looked light years away from being a trophy winning club today. That was a classic Mourinho team performance, they closed the game out like a team with a winning mentality/nous does, they smelt our collective weakness and failings, went ahead and never gave us a look-in.
My old man saw us win the league, I really fear I will never see that in my lifetime.

Although chelsea will likely close the gap to two points before we next play, I think it's a blessing we don't play again now for 9 days - these gutless clams will need that time to get this out of their system. We cannot have them turning up to the Watford game on a downer feeling sorry for themselves. If they do, then we will drop points and doing that will likely see us blow the top 4.

So it's definitely beneficial that the gutless clams have these 9 days - please get the job done and go on to end in the top 4.

We then need to get into the summer and try somehow to get our level of fullbacks, back to what it was the last few years i.e. Rose and Walker days. The former appears to be finished, the injury has killed him it seems as injuries did to the likes of kaboul and Sandro. And the latter we depressingly sold to the side who now sweeps all before them.

Those two scared the brick out of the opposition and the current two we have are absolutely nowhere near their ability.

Tierny from Celtic perhaps, as Sessegnon seems too good to play left back and right back idk. We had walker but we sold him because he asked to leave and that is unforgivebale for the apparently oh so important team spirit. Yeah whatever.

We need a long term replacement for dembele and by that I mean a seriously world class player. No mucking around, the type that will cost 60m and want wages around 180k pw.

With regards Poch he definitely deserves the opportunity to correct the mistakes and lead us into the new stadium for at least a couple more years, but if same old is happening after that time, then we should try our hand with one of the elite managers in the game.

I don't understand why we don't have belief to get over the line though, we have plenty of seasoned internationals who play big games every week of the year.........it just doesn't wash with me. Its collective guts and bottle as well as on an individual level. People need to start taking responsibility as an individual first to drag the team forward and then collectively everyone takes responsibility as a result. Do your own job and do it well.......if 8-9 do that then you probably win the match. Its not a lot to ask in one big game every now and then.

I think belief its probably the least important factor of those identified. But you can't fake confidence. A side like Juve have been there done it. Mourinho too. It just comes with experience. But first we simply need to defend better...that would have got us over the line imo against Juve, and possibly yesterday. But don't forget we soundly beat Madrid and Chelsea so the team has what it takes. If you're a little off form, maybe fatigued too after a long season (3rd game in a week was it?), you need a solid defense to see you through. We started so well, but were 'out defended'.

We have the answer. It's Alderweireld.

You might add Walker, Rose and Wanyama as well as Toby. Of that back 5 only Vertonghen remains first choice this season. Yes the FB and Wanyama rotated, but that was a very solid unit.

There was probably some kind of gentleman's agreement last summer that Toby could leave this summer if a figure was met. Which is why we shelled out for Sanchez.

Well just back home and it still feels like a bad dream that 2nd half shambles... listening to the ManU fans singing loudly as I queued for the train home... doesn’t hurt nearly so much as the last semi-final that I got to see live (the 2012 Chavski one which I’m still traumatised about) at least... going to watch a recording of the game now and re-read this thread to help shake me out of this daze...

Not sure this Thread will clarify more than Poch useless/no he’s not, Dembele cost us a vital goal/it was just a mistake, bench Kane/play him through and Toby should have played/wasn’t fit enough. And that’s just for starters.

Sounds much like the debate that was going on between supporters around me this afternoon, hadn’t heard so much whinging since the last time I had the misfortune of getting a seat in the Paxton Stand!

Absolutely this. The issues with Alderweireld have meant we are not as strong in defence along with losing 2 quality fullbacks in Rose and Walker. Trippier has always been suspect defensively for me and Davies isn’t quite as good as 2015/2016 Rose. In the key games defensive lapses have cost us. We need an experienced replacement for Toby and a right full back upgrade on Trippier.

You can take any players or managers out of Spurs but you cannot take Spurs out of Spurs ! Spurs will always be Spurs ! They will always let you down when you put too much hope on them. With this defeat, we have now lost our last 8 FA Cup semi finals since last winning the FA Cup in 1991. More annoyingly, we will now be without a trophy for more than 10 years for the first time since 1951 ! Pochettino has to take full blame for his stupid team selections and substitutions. As soon as I saw Vorm was starting in goal instead of Lloris, I knew we would lose this match. How can you start your no.2 goalie in an important Cup semi final just because he was out injured for last season's semi final ? It seems like Pochettino treated this match like a friendly and not as a Cup semi final.

Our Wembley curse have come back to affect us with a vengeance ! As my 11 year old nephew pointed out, we have now lost our last 3 matches (Juventus/ManCity/ManU) at Wembley and lost out in all the Cups(West Ham in League Cup, Juventus in CL, ManU in FA Cup) at Wembley despite leading all the matches comfortably. Not sure if or when we will ever win a trophy again ! This is where we badly miss the Cup specialist Juande Ramos who won us the League Cup in 2008. All the managers since then (Redknapp,AVB,Sherwood,Pochettino) only seem to know how to play well in the league and have been shyte in Cup matches. I am convinced Pochettino will keep us in top 4 in the league but won't win us a trophy. We have been consistently poor in all the Cup matches under Pochettino. After all, when you need replays to beat shyte teams like Rochdale and Newport in earlier rounds, you don't deserve to win the FA Cup !

All our key players were poor in this match. We did start this match well and took the lead through a well-taken Alli goal, assisted by an inch perfect Eriksen cross. We dominated for large periods of the first half but failed to make our domination count. ManU didn't look like scoring a goal during that period but in a typical Spurs fashion, we gifted them the goal after a uncharacteristic error by Dembele. This is why I always hate it when we dribble near our goal. Dembele tried to do showboating by dribbling too much but lost the ball which allowed ManU to score from that. Annoyingly, we didn't turn up in the second half and didn't look like scoring even after going behind. Alli scored the goal but went missing after that. Kane was missing the whole match while Son didn't turn up against another big team yet again ! Eriksen worked hard but all his shots lacked the usual accuracy or power. I think we would have done better if Lamela had started this match or at least come on much earlier in the second half. It was really stupid of Pochettino to bring on Lamela only for the last 5 minutes. Lamela still created a good chance with a inch perfect freekick late in the match but it was wasted by Wanyama. Disappointingly, Moura didn't have much impact after coming on.

We lost this match in midfield. Our midfield failed to control the match and Dembele was even directly at fault for their goal. It was also stupid of Pochettino to bring on a defensive midfielder Wanyama when we badly needed a goal ! But credit to Dier for having a decent match, hitting the post with his long range shot late in first half and making a world class tackle to stop ManU scoring late in the second half. Our defence seemed to be all over the place for both their goals. Vorm should have done better for both their goals. I think he should have come out and punched clear the cross for their first goal while he should have stopped the weak shot for their second goal. Our defence of Vertonghen and Sanches went missing for both their goals. I think Alderweireld should have started as he would have greatly improved our defending.

It is annoying when you go without a trophy for more than 10 years which we have done now. Feel sorry for my 14 and 11 year old nephews who badly wanted to see us win a trophy. My elder nephew was 4 year old when we won the League Cup in 2008. I still remember how we were losing 1-0 to Chelsea and feeling desperate I held my nephew's hand and asked him to help us win. Barely 10 seconds later, we won the penalty and went on to win
the League Cup in extra time. Such great moments like that can only come when you win a trophy, not when you finish in top 4 ! But now not sure if or when we will ever win a trophy again ! Special mention to Levy, Pochettino and the players for putting your name into history books and hall of shame as the first Spurs team to go without winning a trophy for more than 10 years since 1951 !

Alderweireld should have played, as should have Lloris. Its a semi final, against Mourinho's Utd, you have to go in with all your big guns
